Opinion on Monuments
I like the idea of having rewards for building large, successful cities, but I always shy away from using the monuments because they feel kinda.. cheaty?

Whats your opinion, and do you end up using them in your city? How would you rank them, from most to least cheaty?

I can see where you are coming from with the cheatyness of the monuments. I guess in their defense, they are usually pretty expensive to both build and maintain even if they are overwhelmingly positive.

For me the primary must have is the space elevator for the sheer volume of tourists it brings in and out of the city. Couple that with both the castle and garden of eden and cities really become tourist destinations. Right now I am a couple hundred away from hitting 6,000/week.

The fusion reactor I build to forget about micromanaging electrical power, and the same for ultimate recycling center/trash. Cheaty, kind of, but I hate those particular micromanaging aspects so I build them anyway.

I have never built the hadron collider and medical center because I always viewed them as -too- cheatey even for this game, but my next load I am going to build them and replace the city services they make redundant with cemeteries/crematoriums. I only use the No Deathcare mod right now, but I really want my city to function 100% without any mods or assets that are not vanilla. This is important for me because with no mods/assets installed, I can reliably play a 400K city at 30FPS / max graphics, but I also don't want to waste any time trying to figure out which mods are bugging out my city.

I've enjoyed about all the monuments that I've unlocked so far, with the only one I ever really had to fiddle a lot with being the Hadron Collider. When I first placed that thing, it lead to a spike in unemployment before it evened itself out. After that it didn't become much of an issue for me and I was able to remove a lot of education facilities that were now nothing but drains on my city. Then Campus came along and I had to place them back bc the collider was just too cheaty while trying to properly play with campus areas. I have yet to place the castle and that big Mega Shelter thing (which I'll never be able to unlock anytime soon anyway)

Also, I don't quite know what the Mega Hospital is supposed to be doing other than look pretty in the background. If it's acting like a real hospital, no cars have ever come out of there.

Pretty much hows i'd rank them in terms of "cheaty-ness". Fusion>Elevator>Recycling>Castle>Garden>Medical>Hadron.
Doubt I'll every get the vault since I don't really play scenarios but it seems to be relatively balanced if all it really gives are boosts to existing vaults, but I don't know for sure.

I always found it kinda weird that they have the education and medical monuments, yet not for police and fire, seems like a missed opportunity.

I've heard a lot of horror stories with the Hadron Collider, and I know i'd have to turn off its education bonus if I ever placed it lest my three universities crash and burn. I also think no cars go in/out of that hospital because the sims are inherently perfectly healthy all the time now, no?

Yes, my city's health rate maintains a constant 100% somehow even though there's been a strange increase in sick citizens from *somewhere* (maybe having to do with noise pollution changes in the last big patch)

I don't use them because they look too sci-fi and out of place. The only one I sometimes use is the large recycling plant thing because that's something I could plausibly see in a city, but really my cities range from 30-90k usually so it's really not even needed at that small scale, especially with the new garbage facilities from SH.

I agree with Catratio, at least thinking back to the last time I looked. The 'Monument' button must rank as the least clicked button in the game. I just don't bother, unless I click it by accident and see a bunch of weird stuff that would look ridiculous on my map.

I use the word 'map' above, instead of city, because the goal on my map is to have several cities across the map, not just one. I often get the message that such and such has been used already, which I think is wasteful of system resources.

I guess these aren't monuments, but is there a mod to unlock only single use items, such as shopping centres or hyper markets?

I've left all my hospitals in place; in fact I've had to add more bc I don't think my Medical center is doing anything but keeping my health percentage at 100%. With the fusion plant I've removed most other plants except for those that are kept in place for the more isolated communities to continually service their local area in case of something going wrong with the power plant, like a fire.

just don't build hadron collider or else your university will stop making money and education all screws up
Mr. Monday May 14, 2020 @ 7:15pm
I got rid of everything but the stadiums from my universities when I built the HC, and put the land they were built on to other use.

that thing is a poison, i love university setup plus it makes good money as long as you got students
