are there any good methods for pedestrian crossing?
the normal way is crap, constantly wants to merge with the road and I cant get it to work with any reasonable space... are there any mods that do this better?

generally how i make my pedestrian crossings is i try to connect residential zones to commercial zones, across large avenues and near mass transit with lots of passengers, chiefly line transfers and hubs. civs will generally prefer walking to anything other mode of transportation. I'm not sure of the exact hierarchy.

Eventually, civs will get a clue they don't have to wait for a light when they can just walk across.

If you mean making them align better with roads, road anarchy lets you move them around and more precisely. You can also turn off road guidelines and snapping depending what you are trying to do.

I have to assume some mod I have installed is forcing the path to try and snap into the middle of the road and makes this a complete nightmare to use.

Honestly hoping for something that's placeable over a road that would be used, like stairs up and then across and stairs down, nice, compact, could work inside of the sidewalk that's already there.

This is the bridge I use when I need it

Put your pedestrian and tunnel entrances next to crosswalks on all sides of an intersection. This will make them more likely to use it instead of a road crossing. Put one pedestrian overpass or tunnel on each side and middle of a zone, running through. I usually use tunnels through district areas and overpasses outside them. Make a path to your commercial area - one in beginning, one in middle, one at end.

Another good trick is put a metro in your residential area with those passages leading to it. Then on the other metro station in commercial or industrial area, have some underground tunnels run trough and pop up on the middle and other side. Ideally, Cims will use ped paths to metro, then more ped paths to wherever. Ideally, you place a pedestrian tunnel or overpass on both sides of metro to make it closest option outside of the metro.

since you mention mods, TMPE allows you to turn off crosswalks. And, for visuals, there's a mod to remove the graphic in the game too. I like that. I do a LOT of above and below ground pedestrian paths and turn off a lot of crosswalks.

Get NExt2 and use the zonable pedestrian paths. That way you can actually connect them to vehicle roads for real, not just the path put-close-and-hope garbage. And because that gives you proper intersections it also avoids the go-to-the-end-of-the-block-to-cross problem.

Or just mix in pedestrian-/bike-friendly roads like

ok, i installed the elevator mod because I thought that would be the best way to do this, but nothing will connect.

I tried making an elevated path again, im 4 squares away from the main road and something is forcing me to snap to the middle of the road with the pedestrian paths.
I am completely unable to make a pedestrian elevated crossing.
Using anarchy im able to get kind of what I want, but nothing will connect up making it 100% useless.
I have no idea what mod broke it. this bad.
I didnt have a problem with the game before, but somewhere in the middle of the last time I played my city making roads became a nightmare because nothing wanted to work right.

I have no idea what is causing problems, i'm thinking of just abandoning city, making a new one and enabling mods one at a time till something breaks or functions poorly

Try this….
Use the paved Path and start off at ground level on grass side of sidewalk and running parallel to the street. Use the Page Up button to create slope to bridge or Page Down for tunnel about 4 squares long in either case. At that elevation draw level path across the street at 90 degrees. Now turn 90 again and draw path about four squares long using Page Up or Down to return to Ground Level.

Good Luck!

And doing everything underground. You just need to go over or under any metro/train lines that are also underground.
What I do is use them in residential areas for the 4 lane roads, with TM PE to bar pedestrian traffic crossing the four lane or larger road. This forces them to use the underground paths. The small two-lane roads they can cross at the cross walks. I also have the paths go to the Metro station in the area so they walk to the Metro, no buses in the neighborhoods. Same for the schools and Hospital, setup a path to those areas.
The commercial, same thing only now all the roads are 4 lanes so there are paths for access to every block and all intersections have underground access to cross all the streets. Traffic does not have to wait for those pedestrians to cross the street.

Your cims are gonna get shanked!

I know theres no in-game consequences (and a connected network like that is actually really cool) But I avoid underground passages due to real-world risks.

Hmm, I usually don't use underground roads because seeing them is such a pain, making it annoying to keep up with what the traffic is doing on them.

But I guess that's not an issue with pedestrian paths, is it...

when I go back into game and see what's making the snapping so nightmarish, I think I may do this for 4 way crossings that are bad and roundabouts. I would do it with an elevated path that attaches to sidewalks, but the game doesn't allow for that and the mods that add that are very road specific.

but I still need to figure out what is making the snapping and hell, because it wasn't this bad when I started the city, but now I cant even make roads connect the same way they did before anymore.
