"An Error Occured" Can't figure out what's wrong
So when I start my game now, this error pops up:

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=782116972

I can't close the dialog box. Hitting "okay" or the X doesn't close it. I have to hit the Escape key a million times before the menu will pop up, and then I can close the box to exit the game.

I've deleted every mod I've downloaded since this error started happening, but it hasn't fixed it. I can't tell by the notes it gives what is wrong or how to fix it.

Has anyone seen this error message before, and knows what to do? I'd appreciate any help.

Thanks.

This error box appeared for me after I deleted a mod/asset I used in a city and then loaded that city.

So by deleting all other mods you have probably made it worse.

Maybe try putting everything back, including ones you may have unsubbed from before this happened.

Someone might have a better fix though

Thank you, Denzarki

I can remember which mods I deleted after the error occured, but I can't for the life of me remember which one I deleted before it.

It would totally suck if this is how my city has to end. But I guess it was time to start up a new one anyhow.

The null reference error is a generic error message that could have a number of different causes, but is usually related to an asset or a mod that required an asset which was present at the time of the save but is not present when loading it.
If you cannot recall precisely what was active at the time you saved, then it won't be resolved.
However... all may not be lost.
Click the 'Copy' option in the error message pop up and then open a notepad and paste it there. This may tell you more details.
You could also use this mod, which will give you more info about failed assets or assets that aren't present.

If the save is not recoverable, then at least use this mod to help prevent it happening again,

Hope that helps ;)

Thank you, grapplehoeker.

I THOUGHT that it might be the case that I deleted a mod that required multiple sub-mods (like a building that also required specific trees or vents, etc.) However, I found out that I can't even create a new game. The same error message showed up even on a new blank city.

Also, I clicked "Copy" but it just had the same text with nothing new.

I'll definitely use the loading screen mod, in hopes it'll at least give me more information.

Thanks again!

if its doing it on new game, maybe a vanilla asset has somehow been deleted.

in steam go to your library, right click cities > properties > local files > verify local cache

see if that finds anything missing

You should never see a null reference error report when starting a new map. It will only appear, as I explained above, when the custom content used at the time of the save is no longer the same at the time of loading that save.

So, as an update, my "Don't Crash" mod was apparently responsible for this. Game works fine now that I've disabled it.
