How well does this game perform on an Intel Core i7-6700K?
In about 2 months im going to do a upgrade on my computer replacing my current MOBO, CPU and RAM, from an AMD Athlon II X4 3,1 GHz and 12GB ram to a Intel Core i7-6700K and 16GB DDR4 2300GHz something. Current GPU is MSI GTX 960 4GB.

After the upgrade, how large cities do you think I could handle without much/any lag? For now with my AMD from 2011 I can go up to 120k+ before it is more or less almost unbearable (5 survivable FPS or less). As i see my current CPU is the bottle neck as my GPU dont run on maximum.

If you ask why I do an upgrade like this, it is more or less because im using programs like Blender more and more which needs powerfull systems. And this upgrade pack im buying makes it all cheaper. I just want to know how well I can expect it to run this, how big I can go?

Performance will be fine. Limitation of performance has more to do with the Unity game engine. That's the bottleneck.
Also, consider how many assets you'll wish to play with. 16GB will be enough for up to 800. For more than that, you should consider 32GB. The more RAM you have will also be an advantage with your 3D modelling and rendering.

It should take you to the max of the game. I'd assume your Athlon x4 would do better. Maybe your city's agents are nearing the max. Have you tried the CSL Show More Limits mod?

Post back the results for, "Active Vehicles" and "Citizen Instances"

Also, try this one-million pop city and see how it performs:

If you want better performance try an X99 system with an i7 6-core, 8-core, or even 10 core. Also, more ram the better, this game can chew up 16GB ram rather quickly with a lot of workshop items.

A 6-core system will only be a slight increase in your budget.

I'm not planning to use more assets than I currently use. I like to keep my game sorta clean. I only use Quad modpack + some minor assets like the modular train station. And a few utility mods. And the road project mod.

I have got this 6700k. Took around 8-10 min to start a new game with 600 assets and mods.
Once is loaded it work quite smooth.
Runs with gtx 1060, 16gb ram, ssd. FPS around 60 on new game, at 500k around 30-40 fps.

Ah... I will upgrade to a better GPU 2-3 months after I have done this month as i need to spare up around for that time to afford a new decent one. Currently got MSI 960 4GB but it works well and as iv'e seen not quite the reason for my lag in the game. My current CPU runs at 100% almost all the time when i play. Especially when my city reach 100k+ and the time slows down along the fps. While that my current GPU is not quite maxed and stil running normal.

Well, this game is mostly cpu bounded so even my cpu got maxed around 95% usage but the gpu is still not fully loaded.

According to the information you gave, I believe you got a 645, which is even slower than the g4400 (60ish gbp) cpu ( in benchmarks ).

I would say if you mainly play this game, the gpu should be fine. Also, I think is not worth to upgrade your gpu at the moment since there's not much choice to get a much better performance ( unless you go for the expensive ones )

Im considering getting VR besides i play many other games. Some of them my current GPU can barely run at ultra with 40-50fps. Going to spare up for that after this cpu upgrade.
