Cities: Skylines
AMD 5800X3D vs i7 12700 for Cities Skylines?
Hey there,
I want to get a new PC for Cities Skylines. Here is what I came up with:

AMD 5800X3D
32 GB of 3200 ram (I will upgrade that to 64 GB a bit later)
3060 RTX 12 GB
1 TB NVMe M.2 SSD

The only thing that I can't yet quite decide is whether to take the 5800X3D cpu or the i7 12700?

I do not play other games beside cities, only transport fever 2, planet zoo and workers and resources: socialist republic that's why I think the cpu is the most important part.

So what do you think? what to chose? the 5800X3D or i7 12700?

Thanks a lot as I can't make up my mind for several weeks already.

What I forgot to mention..I want to run cities with thousands of assets of course, so modded, not vanilla.
any of thos cpu would work just fine but this game needs it ram.
4GB RAM: Base game
8GB RAM: Base game + 100 assets, 1-2 DLC's
16GB RAM: Base game + 500 assets, 5-10 DLC's
32GB RAM: Base game + 2000 assets, 15 DLC's
64GB RAM: Base game + 4000 assets, All DLC's
I run CS now on a I7 with 16RAM (LAPTOP( and 48GB page file on SSD as it has 1TB too.

Still trying to get more RAM but my game with about 110mods and 5700 assets loads in 2min and 30 seconds.

Your fan needs to be great as it gets hot but I am loving it. Couldn't find an AMD for that price.
If you are talking about the 12700K/F, then indisputably the 12700K/F, since it has a much higher maximum boost frequency.

Since both Cities Skylines nor Transport Fever 2, a game that is even more CPU-constrained than CS due to its lack of hard limits, only use a few cores to run the bulk of the simulation, the single most important deciding factor is higher speed, on which the 12700K/F is noticeably better.

32 GB RAM should be enough for "thousands" of mods, especially with a page file based on a SSD set aside, though if you can upgrade the RAM that would be for the best.

The 12700k would be my choice, it has faster single, dual, quad, and octa-core speed, it's cheaper and with the correct cooling can be overclocked to 5Ghz.

I'd get this board to go with it and buy a 32GB stick of ram as opposed to 2x16GB so you don't have to upgrade all your ram when you're ready to.

They are both overkill for this game. Either one will be fine. You could even get a lower spec like 5600x or 12600k and maybe get 64GB now.

The RTX 3060 is fine and very capable for this game and the ones you listed.

But if you have any lag it will be either the game itself tapping out or page file usage slowing the game down. But the hardware itself should simulate the game just fine.

Lastly, what are your current rigs specs? Most likely you won't won't see much difference on an upgrade.

Also, what were your reasons for upgrading?
I just bought a brand new laptop today as something very very close to what I wanted finally became available in my region and my local store had it in stock. Just one each of the intel and AMD versions. So I bought it on the spot. It's so new it is still in its box.

I chose the Intel as it's what I always planned to get following numerous reviews watched and read online while waiting for availability. If I just played games I'd have likely gone for the AMD, but I wanted maximum processing capability and this game is not the only thing I do. I've been saving my pennies over the past 18 months or so for this moment so wasn't going to delay. I had intended to get the i7 but it was not available.

No doubt this is overkill for this game but this is me done now for the next 3 or 4 years.

Lenovo Legion 5 Pro 16
• Intel Core i9-12900H
• 32GB (16GBx2) DDR5 4800MHz
• 2x 1TB PCIe/NVMe M.2 2280
• 15.6" WQXGA IPS Anti-Glare 165Hz
• NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 8 GB GDDR6
• Windows 11 Home

A 31.5' spec matching monitor was also ordered and will arrive in a few days.

My new laptop replaces this ..

ASUS ROG GL703GM
• Intel i7 8750H
• 16GB DDR4
• HDD 1TB 5400 RPM + 1TB SSD M.2
• 17.3" FHD 120Hz
• NVIDIA GeForce RTX 1060 6GB GDDR5
• Windows 10

Can't wait to see and feel the difference with Cities. I only use around 800 assets so I may give myself some more leeway now and extend that to 1,000. LSM reported 16.2GB (in red) so it was entering virtual disk territory.

I am so excited, but exhausted. I'll probably find out tomorrow. Backed up all my game files already for the change-over.
