Laptop tips appreciated!
Hi,

I have been playing for about 2-3 years maybe and I want to take it to a higher level. Tired of not beeing able to use all the mods that i want and not beeing able to use a deacent amount of assets.

Im looking for a laptop under 1200 dollars. Would appreciate any tips on what to buy.

Is HP OMEN Laptop 15-ce008no - a good choice?

OMEN by HP - 15-ce008no Product Specifications

Intel® Core™ i5-7300HQ 4 cores @ 2.5 GHz base frequency = too slow. I have i5 with 4 cores @ 4.4 and it slows down when reaching 80k population and a certain amount of buildings, with only little mods and assets installed.

8 GB DDR4-2400 SDRAM (1 x 8 GB) = too few. People with many mods and assets report problems with even 16 GB and recommend 32 GB. Look for a 16 GB model if you aim for cities:skylines

NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1050 (4 GB GDDR5 dedicated) might be sufficient but in the advent of the other parts, it might not help with a modded cities:skylines

Look for something better and don't buy expensive gaming stuff, it's just marketing.

Ultimately this notebook is good for overwatch and games like that but not for this simulation type of game. I highly recommend a desktop too.

Not even close. Maybe the new 8th gen 6-core laps coming out. But the cheapest one so far is $1,800 and a GTX 1070 with 16GB. Maybe they'll soon have an 8GB and GTX 1060 model for cheaper.

but an i7-7700HQ plus GTX 1060 6GB with 16GB would be minimum. But I'd wait for the 6-core version laptop. It will be so much better especially with workshop.

and yes, you should be looking for gaming laptops. they usually have dual heatsinks for better cooling. 1 for CPU and separate 1 for GPU. The biggest problem with laptops are heat, and if the CPU and GPU share a single cooler then it will overheat more quickly and throttle you CPU and GPU and lag the game badly.

Look up your laptop thoroughly on YouTube. Make sure to look up disassembly or how to replace HDD, SSD, fans,or whatever to look inside and see the heatsink layout. The thinner they are, the more heat they generate. they should have two exhaust ports on the rear. one on left and one on right.

MSI constantly get best ratings for their laptops because they have such good cooling solutions in their laptops.

Yeah, look for laptops powered by 8th generation H series processors. If you're really tight on a budget, look for 8th generation H-series i5 series processors or 7th generation H series i7 processors. Make sure to get plenty of ram by either getting a laptop with more (if you can't upgrade the ram in the laptop) or just popping more memory in. Ram is really expensive right now so be mindful of that.

Thanks for the answers and tips guys. Really appreciate it. The reason I'm looking for a laptop is because I'm a student and could use it in school as well.

I'm starting to consider buying a desktop instead i guess you get a lot more for your money that way.

Do you have any tips for what desktop i should buy?

Definitely a newer 6-core system for this game with future support for other games.

The new Ryzen 2000 series release tomorrow, so they should be very well supported by now and worth investing into and at a lower price point than Intel.

I recommend GTX 1060 6GB/RX 580 8GB graphics minimum.

16GB RAM minimum. at 8GB you will be limited by workshop. 16GB will roughly support 1,000 assets and a few mods.

Such a notebook is not what you want to take to the university it's overkill. If you want a desktop you may wait with the new AMD stuff and await reviews. Sometime soon a new Nvidia gen will drop and new memory factories will open in Korea so everything will be cheaper in approximately a year+

Gaming Laptops are overprized. You will get so much more power for the same money with a desktop. I do recommend a 6 core and DDR4.

Complete agree. If you prefer mobilty rather than Power go for AMD or 6 Core Intel. GPU is not stressed much, but you have to struggle with temp with laptop except ones with good thermal design and higher price

How would this do? (page is in swedish sorry)

https://www.inet.se/produkt/1511004/taurus-experienced-gtx-1060

Specs:

GeForce GTX 1060 6gb

Core i5, (8400)2.8 GHz, 4 GHz turbo

RAM is only 8GB and I know that this game need more, but atm i cant find a computer with more RAM, that is within my budget.

Would i be able to play this game with 500+ assets and a brunch of mods with a good fps?

Then study!
Forget about gaming and especially forget about spending a single penny on gaming while you are still a student.
When you are working and no longer have to worry about repaying your student loan, then you can afford to consider gaming as an expensive pastime.

Im not asking for any life advices... But IF I would, trust me i would'nt ask you mate, and I would definetly not ask in here. NO offense. I made quite alot of money when i moved and starten studying. Im well aware of how expensive it is but after well consideration i feel that i am willing to invest some in this hobby.

What makes you believe you're entitled to an answer that you want to hear?
You came to this general discussion forum and stated that you're a student and that you have been not only playing games for 2-3 years, but you also have $1200 to spend on a machine that you want to primarily use for gaming and specifically this game.
Whether or not you accept any advice given, I am free to express my opinion of your expensive distraction from what your prime focus ought to be - your education.
I'm not your mate and I have no intention of being complicit by helping you with your 'actual question'. The actuality is your priorities are way off.

You need at minimum: a quad core CPU, 24gb ram and a gtx 1060
Smiles Jun 16, 2018 @ 7:03am
I've got a Intel i7-7700hq CPU @ 2.80GHz, with GTX 1050ti in my Dell Gaming Laptop, and as long as I am not running hundreds and hundreds of custom assets, I've found it to be fine for Skylines. I can PUBG, Wolfenstein New Order, and many simulation games.

My Dell Gaming laptop was decently expensive, but worth it, since it doubles as my work computer as well. Great dual purpose.
