Counting park visitors?
I built a mid-size nature preserve roughly in the center of my city. Like most DLCs, it needs some count to level up and unlock. In this case, visitors. I intended the park to be free and available to everyone. I did not fence it in. In fact, it is open with multiple access points through out the city.

My question: The MAIN GATE|PARK INFO counts visitors and has the level up slider. Do visitors need to pass through the main gate or just enter park zoned land? Or simply reach a destination (on a route plan) like a fishing pier which falls in the park?

Thanks!

PS: I am getting visitors, but I wondering if many are slipping in and out without being counted.

Any gate will do, but they need to enter through a gate. If you have any paths that can reach the park without going through a gate you need to remove them. Otherwise those people won't be counted towards the visitor count nor will they be paying anything to enter the park.

Yep it only counts people who enter through gates. There are mod gates with no gate so it looks like a path, but you can just throw a bunch of gates up, run until it upgrades all the way, and then remove all but the main gate. This saves money on a free park as gates cost maintenance.

Gates may also be “entertainment” for nearby land but not sure if that’s important.

Thank you for the clarification.

I will probably throw up some vanilla auxiliary gates to capture foot traffic off of ped walks going in. I would like to accelerate the level up. Money is not important as admission is free. Industry and property taxes is driving the economy.

It had just seemed to me that a very large city park should be very accessible, and not look like a secure military base. In the past, I did do a single main entrance with a fence around the perimeter.

You don’t really need a fence as long as the gates are positioned well. City park is the one with the smallest side gates (they’re just an arch) and so is the easiest to get to level five fast.

Fences - whether of the prop or the network persuasion - don't control pedestrian movement within the game. Cims will walk through a fence as though it isn't there if the game believes that a pedestrian connection exists at that point; conversely, they will never walk through a gap in the fence if the game does not believe that there is a pedestrian connection there.

Fences are an aesthetic choice and a safeguard against accidental zoning or plopping, not a means of access control.

Okay, the visitor count is really soaring after making those changes to the access points.

I have a problem. People are dying at my camp sites. No matter what I do; no one will pick them up.

???

Thanks.

The collection point for everything (trash, police, corpses, etc.) should be the main building for all of the DLCs where you zone a special area (ie: parks, campuses, industries). Only fire response need to be going to the affected area. AFAIK the only time this changes is if the main building is destroyed and is waiting to be repaired by the disaster response teams. (I don't know if the AP DLC is different because I don't have it.)

Please post some screenshots or the game save so we can better help you.

FYI: I understand your desire to keep your parks free, but if you ever place them in the right spot in your cities the people will pay just to walk through to the other side. You can even take advantage of this by making a couple areas with a park between them that people must walk through to get to the other area.

I think I know what I did that caused the problem. I used non-DLC zonable paths in my nature park. The zoning probably changes where collections occurs, but it doesn't seem vehicles enter parks to do this.

BTW, if I want to put things like a cable car ride in my park which requires real roads, I suppose I can either use roads with no side walks or use a short highway segment to prevent people from walking in and avoiding the gates.

I need to play around with this some more.

It does get confusing with assets from vanilla, DLCs, workshop, and paths seemingly from vanilla, DLCs, and workshops again. You cannot just chose something based on appearance.

Thanks.

PS: That's very sneaky using a park as a toll pedway. :)

Using a short 2 lane/2 way highway segment at 20mph worked really well to bring zoned buildings in the park like a cable car to get services, and at the same time prevent Csims from walking in off the road and skipping the gates.
