Monorail vs the new aboveground metro
Let's say I'm trying a zero-tunnel build on Seven Lakes (because this looks like a place ripe with swamping issues). I'm wondering which of the two I should use as the backbone of my public transport (alongside ferries, perhaps).

Off the top of my head, monorail benefits from integration into roads, but it's incredibly noisy. Also, the switch between above-road monorail and free-standing monorail requires some pre-planning to avoid it looking utterly repugnant.

Meanwhile, with the metro you can't get out of losing some space for the bridges and stations. However, outside downtown you can switch it to ground level. Also, the paid stations pack provides many additional options to enhance the over-ground network.

Is there even a point to the monorail anymore?

LOL, accurate human behavior.

So I wasn't wrong thinking of the monorail as in between trams and metro.

I would absolutely choose Above Ground Metro over Monorail IF ONLY Colossal Order remembered to also add Above Ground Metro OVER ROADS as an option as Above Ground Metro Over Roads is how it's done in some cities like Chicago's El and in my Country with the LRT Lines 1 and 3 and the MRT, or LRT Line 2.

RFE - Addendum:

As is, the only way to get Above Ground Elevated Metro to be place on roads is by using the "Metro Overhaul Mod" (MOM) and that way's too finicky.

Vanilla monorail capacity is 180, while vanilla metro capacity is 150. However, monorail tracks have a default speed limit like tram tracks that prevents each train from reaching its top speed, whereas metro tracks have no default speed limit. You can change the speed limits with TMPE.

Believe it or not, the top speed of the vanilla trams is actually the same as the vanilla metro. The trams are just limited to slow speed limits. The four lane road with tram tracks is the most efficient way to run trams in vanilla since its speed limit is 25% higher than all other vanilla tram tracks.

Yeah, that's pretty silly. I was thinking about a proto-metro of suburban trams on dedicated lanes, but it sounds like a no-go in vanilla.

Forgive me if I am wrong, but tram tracks can be placed "off-road" if I am not mistaking, even with vanilla tracks.

Yes, there's a tram-only option. But AFAIK it offers no speed advantage, and very simple "high-speed tram road" mods are required instead.
