What you can do though is use your own textures to replace the generic textures of the game.
You do not need any mod to do this as the game has a feature built-in, the Theme Editor.
If you have access to alternative terrain textures, or if you have made your own, then you can substitute the game's textures with yours. So, if you have better grass or sand textures, use the Theme Editor.
Also, if the textures incorporated a layer for ambient occlusion (or also SSAO), then this can be exploited by your graphics card to make it appear to be more realistic... or at least simulate the appearance of how light interacts with it, which will them appear more real to our eyes.
Have fun ;)
