How to fix traffic backup
I've noticed that traffic in my city is backing up like crazy, it just piles into one lane when there are 5 available, nothing works, even forcing them to not merge using Traffic Manager! They merge further back until there's a pileup 10 blocks long! How do I get traffic to use all 5 lanes?

You probably won't. The traffic AI dictates the shortest/quickest route between points. So the vehicles are all crowding into one lane to either make a left turn or pile off a ramp. Observe where the bulk of this traffic is going and build alternate turn-off/routes to get them there. Consider downgrading roads to manipulate speeds to encourage these alternate routes. (Vanilla traffic management)

The traffic Manager president edition mod makes a huge difference BUT the biggest difference is ensuring you have a good public transport system.

I'm pretty new to the game but a Metro system reduced my traffic immensely

I also looked closely at the massive lane backups I had and noted where the traffic was actually going. Once I established that I added a few filters off the freeway to those areas so they didn't go through the main intersection. But as traffic always finds the fastest route you gotta be careful that the bulk of the traffic doesn't want to use your little short cut

Use some TrafficManager mods!

With their help you can set onto which lane they are allowed to turn, etc.
It will not help 100% but it get's better and if it is still not enough, you should maybe think about redesigning your city! ;)

I fixed it, I used a turnoff with a 6 lane highway and blocked merging with Traffic Manager, they now use all 6 lanes
