Is a city with a population of 1 million possible
Is it possible to have a city with a total population of 1 million+?

Technically no, you can't hit one-million population.

But with mods, you can break the rules and easily do it in the default 9-tiles or less.

All you really need is a demand mod and keep residential high. Residents won't complain of unemployment, no shopping, or anything and you can hit 1-million pop quickly.

Without mods, I've seen 700k cities.

I have a 655k city with only the 25-tile unlock. You can remove the mod after unlocking 25-tiles and they stay unlocked. Then you can fill in the 25-tiles without mods.

Okay bet!
I have a city with around 700k so I was wondering if I could hit 1 million. should I try to get 1.5 or even 2 million?

Citizen limit in game is 1048576, so I dont think its possible. Use Watch It! to keep track of the limits you are getting near to since you might also need to rezone a bit to accommodate the building/zones limit as well.

Sorry for the late reply. thank you for posting. I have one question. Would using 81 tiles work too?
Also, do you think that one day they will add a the ability too make 1 million plus cities without mods?
MarkJohnson Apr 24, 2020 @ 2:07am
81-tiles is fine. I don't think it's possible to build it fully, the 25 tiles max out on me from travel distances and reaching game limits. But 81-tiles rural area should be fine.

I don't know if going past one million pop is possible. I imagine it is hard coded into the game. not to mention the game has so many limits, you'd likely reach one before getting much past one-million pop.

Maybe cities skylines 2 will add it in?
Sirbester Apr 24, 2020 @ 6:08am
Maybe they will add it in cities skylines 2. Although I feel it's would be more likely in a dlc expansion. And you are right about it being hard coded in the game.

It might be possible to add code something to increase that limit or change the code. but that would be modding. Also you do have a good point about the limits of the game.

I read somewhere that it was actually 65k if we're talking individual cims... beyond that the numbers are just simulated growth (for search of a better term)...

They will NEVER add the "ability" to build 2m+ cities. The game has an in-build limit of 9 squares and lots of wonky stuff happens on the map's edge. So, you want 25 tiles? I like it too, but that will come with costs such as extra bloat, and risking a lot of small in-game issues. You can rename a car or airplane and then find 2-3 of them with that name off the main tiles.

The game just misbehaves and fails to calculate. So they never intended to support that type of gameplay, and they won't. Doing so would mean no longer supporting the lower end systems.

Why 25 tiles when you can have 49 tiles? Haha!

I do 49 (7x7) so there's a 1-tile border around the city, I don't like building near the "fog"...

Having said that, my cities barely reach 100k, because I don't cram 200 blocks of residential in there and call it done, I prefer to make my city look interesting.

If I did go for mass population, I expect I'd run into more lag than I do.

True. The game isn't made to handle more than 65k citizens at once without modding.

Rather than never. it's more extremely unlikely. Also you do bring a good point with them no longer supporting low end systems. personally I have a pretty well off computer (8 cores, 32GB ram) but I do know a lot of people who do have low end systems. They do enjoy the game and dropping support for them would really suck. I should also point out that lots of people don't have high performance computers. So it wouldn't be the best idea on there side.

This is an off topic question. Do you upload your cities to the workshop?

Nope, generally because I've never actually finished a city... LOL

I've started to upload occasional screenshots, but don't get too excited, there's only a few...

Alright. To be honest. I never really finish cities either. I just make them and then move on. Also I'll check out a few of your screenshots.
