Subway Station update ruins my city planning
First play with the new patch applied and immediately I ran into troubles. The length of the subway station has been increased: Where the old station could be fitted beneath the earth now with the longer platform it always says "space already occupied" or something like that because of a small hill or slope. I don't know about others but that basically ruins my city planning. Would need to erase large parts of my city to properly flatten the ground for the new station to fit beneath the earth again. I tried to mod the station but I cannot find a way to shorten the platform underground. Any help or suggestions? Would really hate to start from scratch again just because of this... city worked so well until now. Also noticed that income sharply dropped post patch (about 130k down to 70k - 90k)... inflation I guess...:steamfacepalm:

The income difference is because the upkeep for metro tunnels increased 800%: https://steamcommunity.com/app/255710/discussions/0/2152098711357066296/

unbelievable *facepalm*... thx for the info.

I have also noticed that the subway stations are now 10m below ground instead of their previous 15m which seems part of the problem
Also been running into problems with the game randomly decided that an underground stations is close enough to the surface to be above ground and force a tunnel portal, creating a 10m deep sinkhole just like the old steam days ventilation shafts.
Has there been any official comment on the radically higher Metro upkeep number? This will dramatically affect my existing games, and because it's also included in the core update, there's no avoiding it.

Not that i am aware of. I cannot understand why they would change all that? It was perfectly fine before. I just deleted my savegames...

The current update pretty much makes the metro useless. And I mean that literally as you won't be able to connect them even on FLAT ground! I was just checking the official forums and weirdly there's hardly any threads about this. On steam there's tons.

I have tried now several hours to make it to work in my city but it's useless.

In dev diary they say: "Since the metro vehicle model now looks more realistic and is longer than the old one, some changes were made to the underground metro stations and pathfinding. This feature won't affect old saves, however you won't be able to make the tracks turn as sharply as was previously possible. Metro lines can still be created the same way as before, by selecting the line tool and adding nodes on metro stations. You can change the elevation of the metro tracks with the same old Page Up and Page Down keys as always. Have fun planning new overground metro lines in your cities!"

Who the **** cares how the metro looks below the ground as you can't even see them down there. They somehow couldn't code the tracks compatible underground ? What gives

Try using the smooth Terraforming tool. I had the problem with one of my metro stations and it smoothed the area enough without removing the building next to the metro so that I did not have the problem with the line wanting to use a tunnel to connect.
Shroud83 Mar 29, 2020 @ 9:46am
Yeah that might work... but I would have to do that for my whole city. Basically every new station that I wanted to build now would require me to flatten the ground. I always built extremely dense neighborhoods. As Daimon stated the way underground rails are build now is just a mess. I used to built them in a rectangular fashion. Now I can't do that anymore. It's anyway complicated to built densly packed cities, but now I need to rethink the whole metro layout. Oh well... I'll give it a try in a week or so.

I've got the same problem with tunnel portal appearing and destroying the buildings next to the metro station but it's not consistent. The height of the connecting point appears to be 12m for me. Occasionally I can get them to connect without the ground level disturbance but I can't link it to anarchy or having the approaching tunnel at a different depth. I'm very frustrated! Having the ability to run the tracks above ground is nice though. Now that I think about it, was it possible in the past to run metro over a bridge before this change?
Shroud83 Mar 30, 2020 @ 6:18pm
Metro used to be exclusively underground... so no, it was not possible to run metro rails over a bridge. I gave it a try with a fresh city... it's annoying as hell. Tediously fumbling around with the terraforming tool just to make the terrain flat enough. Why not allow the station to align with the elevation e.g. allow tilted stations. Placing rails is, uh, ok I guess. Still wish they would allow for sharper angles, like 90°.

Apparently (according to a thread on the official forums) Fine Road Tools 2 and/or Fine Road Anarchy "may" be the mod/s causing the unwanted tunnel/sinkhole exit issue, although I haven't tested it myself.

Also in regards to the stations being too short (or the trains too long) apparently (again according to a thread on teh official forums) the devs "tweaked" the model for the metro train, and added an extra carriage/segment (up from 5 to 6)

This affected all the existing pre-update metro trains, making them too long ... HOWEVER they also "shrunk" the "new" metro mesh so that it has the same length as the old one, so you'd need to either a) Delete all your lines and redo them to spawn the "new" metro's or b) use the Advanced Vehicle mod to remove and then re-add/respawn the metro trains.
Shroud83 Mar 31, 2020 @ 5:36am
Cannot confirm the "shrunk" part... I almost never had to terraform for the metro stations in the past, now almost every time I place one it says "space already occupied" because of a slope or hill in the area. I don't know if I get something wrong here but its very seldom for me now to just place a station without the hassle of flattening and smoothing the ground. I don't use any of the mods you mentioned. But I guess I'll have to get used to it or hope they change something about it in the future.

I think the tracks need to default one more half ground level lower. I've had bajillion problems with things popping up above ground, metro tunnels misbehaving if placing long legs, etc. This is no different for me, other than the mistake being consistent at the point of connecting a rail to the station. At some point, it will invariably pop up above ground and become a tunnel, destroying various constructions, pipes, and roads you have built.
