How to make cities more walkable

Could these theories be applied to Cities: Skylines? Why/Why not?

I'm considering trying to build a walkable city by banning private vehicles and having tons of bus/metro options.

I think it's way easier in-game, because people will happily walk really far and take multiple public transit modes in one trip.
