Steam isn't very clever though and it is responsible for your issue.
A reinstall of the game is never a solution. Restart Steam to kickstart it into recognising your Games Library content and then perhaps run the Verify Integrity of Game Files app found via rt click game in Steam Library, Properties/Local Files.
Okay, it makes sense that the uninstall was triggered by steam, my bad. I did restart steam completely, hoping it would just re-discover the game but that did not happen.
As for the "verify integrity of game files" option: this wasn't available since the game, according to steam, was not installed. So all options on the "local files" tab were greyed out.
Anyway, as you pointed out correctly, this most like isn't an issue caused by this game, but rather by steam itself. Now I also know how to resolve it next time it happens. Therefore this issue is solved - thanks for your input though.
@Ferdiepip [NL] yeah I was afraid for that to happen too - that's why I keep using cloud saves and also have my save folder in sync with google drive
