The path was probably green since I was trying to place another one just next to it to see how the line looks and it was green.
So I should just wait, right?
I was also thinking about the need of having my own ships for it to wowk but that doesn't seem to be an option in the game.
Using a harbour requires the harbour to be placed along the shoreline and within the required minimum distance to an existing shipping route.
A shipping route is not a ferry path.
Also, be aware that many map authors (CO included) create maps with poorly thought out shipping routes that usually connect from one outside connection to another. Examine the map and if this is the case, break that route and edit it so that there is only a single dedicated route between your port or harbour and that outside connection.
This is because all intercity connections that share a route to multiple outside connections will generate vehicles there and the loads per vehicle will be shared among all vehicles spawned. This can result in over spawning and the loads will be inefficient.
So just remember this simple rule: use only 1 intercity terminal per outside connection.
This applies to ships, trains and planes too.
Here's an example of two shipping routes connecting to 2 outside connections that is incorrect

A simple edit here now ensures that both the port and the harbour have 2 independent routes to the 2 outside connections.
Note how I broke the air route too so that the airport I shall build here also has 2 independent routes instead of sharing a connection to both at the same time.

It is notable for not having a river and so sewage handling can be a bit of a challenge. Make use of the high clifftops for water towers as your source of freshwater, since that will place them far from any ground pollution. How you deal with the smelly brown coastline you'll inevitably end up with I'll leave you to figure out ;)
Here's a solution I came up with which you might find useful ;)
