Why don't vehicles change lanes properly in this game?
I've realised most of my traffic porblems come from the way vehicles change lane. Instead of taking a few hundred meters to steer slowly into another lane, they do a ninety degree turn holding up the entire lane. I understand that if each vehicle was programmed to wait for an open space it would take up alot of cpu, but in place where there are no vehicles and they are all programmed to turn why would they do this shoddy programming?

The 90° lane change is due to perception. At highway speeds it looks more natural the lane changes. At slower speeds it looks more odd. There is I think only one lane change behaviour, it’s the way it is. Your issue is not the lane changing itself though it may look like it. It’s that they don’t have the room to do the lane change without interfering with other traffic. It could be your traffic is too close together. Or I would ask why are they waiting till here to change two or three lanes at this spot rather doing it one lane at a time back there? Then investigate that question and try to resolve the issue. Another reason for these behaviours is they can only change lanes at node points within the roads. This I think would increase the chance for vehicles to collide. Most of these undesirable behaviours can be remedied by you. The traffic operates under simple rules but by no means is it simple. There are a great many things you can do with the traffic in this game.

In this clip below view the other side of the highway, the one not being repaired renovated. A garbage truck does nasty lane change @1:38 or what I call lane jumping, then does a proper lane change to the exit it wanted. This garbage truck is telling me that the exit is still a little too close yet for the garbage truck to proper lane change all the way to the exit (need a renovation). @2:38 a pair of garbage trucks do the same lane changing behaviour, cut off traffic doing so. Interestingly @2:58 another pair of garbage trucks do this manoeuvre in reverse. That is entering the highway they both do a single lane change and then do a lane jump to the exit. Showing that they are not limited to one behaviour in a given situation. When you create highways that conform to their restrictions (nodes) the traffic will travel more realistically.
@2:19 check out the funny ambulance

It is rather odd for a vehicle to jump 2 or even 3 lanes in the middle of the highway (eg. in a 3-lane jump from the outer to the inner lane at once). I use Traffic Manager at those points to limit the lane changing at that point and the points before and aft. Seems to make for a better flow of traffic.

I haven’t used Traffic Manager though some friends have. One friend told me he used it to correct lane pathing throughout the city, mainly on the highways though. After turning off the mod he noticed no drop in traffic flow.
