I'm familiar with Gimp, but I prefer Photoshop to create and prepare my custom textures for use in game. The texture creation is fairly straightforward in either app.
However, implementing a texture in game will involve adjusting the gamma properties of the texture and I'm not sure how well Gimp can do that.
This is because the game's lighting will cause the natural gamma level to glare very bright and so you need to adjust it until it's acceptable. This is more of a trial by error process and you may need to switch back and forth between the image editing app and the game until you're satisfied.
