What's the difference --- Industry?
I have a district which will be zoned for industry and tagged with the ore specialization.

I have an industrial zone which will have the ore industry main building constructed.

---

What's the difference between these two approaches?

My assumptions:

District: Is the older pre-DLC method and will pretty much let the AI do an ore theme and generate increased profits from the resource; potentially cargo opportunities too.

Zone: Is the newer DLC method and will allow me far greater control in decisions which will impact supply chain, profit, cargo, ...

What sayest the intelligentsia of Steam CS players?

Thanks.

If you'll want to build the Unique Factories you'll need to make at least one of all the newer industrial areas, and get them to 5-star rating if you want to build all of the UFs.

If you are using the Industries DLC, you might consider using the Rebalanced Industries mod by Qboid.

I picked up all the DLC for CS. I already had 50%, and then I saved $800 USD on software licensing. So, I picked up the rest.

I do have the rebalance mods.

At the moment, I am doing an industry/ore/district so that I can later compare it to an industry/ore/zone.

My whole goal with sandboxing at the moment is to exercise every aspect of the game without penalty. Then, I will go off and play with the meter running. :)

* pre DLC is only the generic industry - yellow zoned industry where the area painting tool is still not available to be used

* free post DLC is the zoned industry, where you paint an area which eg included the generic industry, which then changes to one of the 4 assigned zoned industries, this type produces zoned industry goods as storable in warehouses
but
this type of industry has already two types in itself, the growable buildings which are on top of the ressources & those buildings which are on non-ressources ground
quote from Wiki :
"It is important to note that there are two types of specialized buildings in each of the industrial specializations. The first type grow on specialized industrial zones that are on top of a natural resource. They produce raw materials from the resource, which cannot be used by generic industry, and must therefore be processed or exported. The second type of specialized buildings, that take the raw materials to be processed, will grow on specialized industrial zones that do not have a natural resource of their type present. They will output processed materials that can be utilized by generic industry or exported."

the ressources for this zoned type of growable industry can be imported

* the DLC contains area ploppable buildings, which work similar to the zoned industries, but produce non importable ressources & goods, most of those buildings must be placed within the painted area but not all
only ore & oil need ressoures in the ground, farm & forestry contain own ressources producing buildings

ressources for the ploppable industry cannot be imported

there is a mod which makes for infinite ore & oil ressources, though there is a vanilla infinite ore & oil option but reported as glitched, didn't use it so far, so cannot commment

* Unique Factories are set up on top of that industrial chain, don't require to be placed within the painted area

* cargo chain is on the other hand a completely different type of a beast, didn't do much with it so far cause i am still wrestling with the basics, namely town layout & traffic problems :lunar2019crylaughingpig:

Wiki contains also an info about Import & Export[skylines.paradoxwikis.com], very helpful

all in all i'd say, it's a good idea to mix all 3 types of industry in an industrial area, generic, zoned & the ploppable buildings based, & oc if you can afford it & your town needs it, the magnificent Unique Factories

Wiki contains also a description about the Supply Chain with a very helpful chart[skylines.paradoxwikis.com]

Thanks a lot. I will go through this carefully.

You can build an industry area absolutely anywhere. The way to do this is define the zone, then plop down a few of the storage buildings (silo's for farm etc) and switch them to Fill. They will buy crops (or ore or whatever) in from outside the city. I usually wait until the storage buildings are full (but you don't have to) and then I plop down the refinery buildings. This means you can create an Ore industry anywhere as opposed to trying to get it where the Ore actually is. The storage buildings will perma buy from outside the city. It's only the refined goods that you cannot import, but you can make those yourself.
