Pedestrian Paths - How Do They Work?
I never used these before till today. I’m not sure why we would use them cause all the streets have sidewalks, so I’m guessing these are like a go between from one area without a street to another?

Anyway, I plopped a park along a street. Behind the park is a big open area, so I connected the two side streets with this ped path; it runs along behind the park. It works, works great, park is receiving a lot of visitors/tourists. Herein lies the problem - it’s a ped path right? Then why, for the love of Pete, are cars driving down it? I even used tmpe labs to ban all vehicle types and still people are driving down there. They’re not stopping at the park, they’re using it as a shortcut to get from one side of this area to the other.

I’m just all confused. I’m trying to make my Cities look better by adding some elements I haven’t tried and I’m failing miserably.

I don’t know...like I said in my original post, I was just trying some new things that I haven’t used before so I can make my boring looking cities look a bit better. But no luck.
I was just about to expand residential in my current little city, so I thought it would be a perfect opportunity to show how I incorporate pathing with my zoning ;)
I'm going to fill this corner. Note how I have allowed spacing between the zoned lots...

The "ped paths" you are using are the ones in the road section??

Any way in the Landscaping section are a different set of paths, These do not allow cars....Have fun, depending on what DLC's you have their are quite a few versions. I do believe the blank one comes stock with vanilla> also their are fences and a lot of other things you can do in the landscaping section !!

You can use either set of paths, but the ones in the road menu do tell you they allow cars , go figure.

I use the paths a lot , I use then to connect dead ends to the main roads, as not all side streets connect to main road because to many intersections, all my parks have paths, paths everywhere and you wont believe how many people you will see. its like China or New York...lol.

Heck put two Metro stations a block apart (separate lines) connect with only a path. watch 1000's of people using the path that are not clogging up your intersections and roads...

But do use the ones in the Landscaping section, as they only allow people and bikes.
EDIT: to add, you can also use them in an elevated fashion at major intersections/roundabouts to let the people cross without stopping traffic.

https://imgur.com/zMxacOe in that pic you can see my path ofer a roundabout thing is , its also a cash grab. to the right is a Industrial zone, many many people are happy to pay me 20 bucks 2 times a day to walk to work...the park life DLC' was a nice addition to my daily income...lol

Close up of the inside of that roundabout...cause they should never be boring :)

Use them for shortcuts and your pops and tourists will love them and keep their cars in their pockets
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1806203019
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1807297931

Beside that you could generate a nice income if you have Park Life
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1806201487

For example , try to push 200 pop or more at once to one point ( match day ) ... no problem if they walk - but if they use a car ???

So those gaps in your zones are empty spaces you left for the paths? That's a good idea too, i'll try that too. Also, you have one section of commercial on the other side of town...is it effective? I always thought that each residential area and or commercial area, need one or the other close by? I had no clue it could work with them spread out. See, i was using SimCity thinking when i designed my CS cities.

With a city this small, everyone can walk to the commercial if they want to, but that square of medium road surrounding the parks and leading to the commecial is served by a double loop of bus lines,so the whole of the residential only have to walk to the medium road (pedestrian pathing helps to enable that) to get to the bus stops and then they can bus to the commercial.

I always keep my commercial away from residential. Commercial is a noise polluter and so is the delivery traffic that serves it, so I keep all of that unhealthy noise away from my homes and that way I get a 0 sickness city and that in turn means I pay next to nothing for healthcare ;)

True ped paths allow the building of buildings that require a road like the parks from the base game, but can prevent even emergency vehicle traffic. Just leave a building gap for a street connection so that people can get to the park.

Also, ped paths are useful to disable cross walks on high volume city streets while building over passes so that people can cross.

Granted, I have never seen anyone get hit by vehicle in this game. SimCity4 when traffic got bad could have intense 20 car pile ups and happiness would decline.

I use the ones from the Campus-DLC. I like that they are lit.

I think with TMPE it is possible to turn any road into ped only. But I would leave emergency and garbage collection service on.

Grapplehoeker,

Two comments from your screenshots:

* CS likes to build parking on slopes. Serious slopes. I assume everyone in CS always uses their emergency brake when parking.

* CS likes buildings to have parking in the rear with no visible path to reach the parking. My coop did not let residents drive through the lobby to park!!!

Did you note how flat the area I built this city foundation upon is?
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1807324651
Do you call this a serious slope?
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1807327001
That's a 20 degree gradient at best.
BTW I now live in one of the flattest countries in the world and I always put my handbrake on where ever I park. Don't you? o.O

You do recall that this is a game and not a real life simulation right?
You do recall that Cims can pull a car out of their magical pockets and park it there too if they wish, right?
Besides, the devs did provide access to the rear parking, which only applies to European high density housing blocks.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1807385899
Parking at the rear suits me just fine too, because it means nothing is parked on the street in front.

Try not to apply real life logic to a game that doesn't use it and your sense of propriety won't be too dazzled ;)
MarkShot9 Jul 17, 2019 @ 6:51pm
I always apply the parking brake mainly because I live in an earthquake zone. Perhaps, that is the least of my worries, but I do anyway.

I know it is a game, but I always find what is and isn't simulated in software to be amusing. (Software is my life's calling.)

Like another thing I love about CS is how people walk by a raging inferno with no reaction. :)

PS: That is only partially unrealistic. I saw video a few months ago of a man assassinated (politics) lying in a pool of his own blood. The most troubling part was not the image, but the people walking by and the complete normalcy of the situation.
