City Skylines keeps crashing out of steam, saves don;t happen or faults occur quite often ,
only been happening over the last few days

OS is Win 10 Build 1903 with 95-2500k, Nvidia 1050Ti and 8 GB Ram

That usually means you ram out of memory.

Try increasing your page file.

000000000 mean there was nothing to write to.

Thanks for your advice I noted in the error report that the 32GB page file only had 187Mb free but I had before this crash tried increasing the page file to 52GB but the programme failed to start when I did that. Only got back to working when I let the system set Pagefile size and it set it to 32GB. Programme is running on an SSD so not a huge amount of space for Pagefile size.

buy more RAM or remove Workshop assets. filling up a 32GB pagefile means you must be subscribed to a lot of assets from the Workshop

Thanks Metacritical, all 4 of my RAM sockets are populated so upgrading and balancing dual channel performance will be expensive . I haven't unsubscribed from assets yet as I'm not sure what unsubscribing asset and mods actually does to my Maps. What I had done was uninstall a game on my SSD (BF3) and freed up a further 34Gb for the pagefile. The odd thing I got was a black screen in the middle of play but when I checked the local folders for today (26 June 2019) I did not have any error reports so I don't know what happened there.

If you are using the Loading Screen mod you could find out what assets you are using and which are not used at all. Thereby you can unsubscribe from unnecessary assets that take to much space.

If you have the loading screen mod you can tell it to generate a file that will tell you if some of your active assets are not used in the save.
You can safely remove those from your active assets (and unsubscribe to them if you don't intend to use them), but removing mods and assets that are used by a save tends to bring the save down as well.

It's true in nearly every game as well, adding a mod mid-game might work (depending on the mod but in most cases it is fine), but when you want to remove mods you should always consider starting a fresh save.

If the page file isn't increasing, then t sounds like your SSD is full. You don't have another drive installed? If you do, you can move the game/Steam to it. Your SSD should be for Windows only.

But 8GB of RAM is very low for this game, especially with workshop.

Thanks Mark, I have 3 250Gb SSDs for games and 2 (1TB) HDDs for Office and Photo tools, the root drive (SSD) has 47 Gb free and the Steam game drive (SSD) now has 88Gb free. I could move BF1 to drive Nr 3(SSD) from C: to for a total of 127Gb free on C but the Pagefile doesn't seem to be moving up from 14-18GB no matter what I do. Just now with the issue of having 4x2Gb RAM sticks, I'll need 4x4GB sticks which would set me back £80-100 in the UK. The current thing that seems to work is to manually game save or save to Cloud, the game hasn't crashed then.

Are you setting up the page file to use more than one drive? Each drive can have one. They will all add up to one drive. then it uses the most convenient one.

Maybe the RAM itself is full and can't page anything out to make room for more things you need and it crashes.

Maybe remove apps in the hidden task bar by the clock? They are located in Task manager (shift+ctrl+esc) under the startup tab.

But spending more money on the old rig is debatable. It would be wiser to build a new budget rig. But that depends on budgets.

Thanks Mark, could be a RAM bottleneck, as for upgrade my thinking exactly, built this PC in 2011 (I think) only got good when I updated to Win 10 64 bit and SSDs and a 1050Ti, played Insurgency without hiccups a few days ago on the free weekend although the Developer FAQs said i5-2500k was not suitable. I play BF4 and BF1 on 1080 so quite low expectations. As for new build, with everything coming out (New multicore Ryzen, etc) I won't be building a new rig until things settle down (2020?). My last AMD build was 2004 using an XP 3000+

Sorry, I didn't say I only have the Origin and Steam game launchers and a couple of utilities in the hidden task bar including Nvidia's launcher.

If you can afford new right now. You can get a decent current or last gen for cheap. The improvements with next gen will be minor. especially since current games still use 4-core, 8-thread cpus at most. I see Ryzen 1600 for under $100, and decnt B450 motherboard for around $60. Ram prices have dropped as well. 16GB ($100) is starting to be mainstream now.

Stock is going fast as AMD is dumping current stock before releasing Ryzen 3000 here any day now.
