really high RAM usage
Im getting about 12Gb of ram usage which is all of my 16Gb which can be allocated to the game. I have about 30 mods and 300 assets. Is that a stupid amount of addons to have or is this normal?

The DLCs alone are enough to make the game eat a large amount of RAM due to the large amount of models that are added by those, so those are usually a big portion for most people.

Doesn't matter how much ram you chuck at this game it just gobbles it up, i upgraded to 32gb last week and my ram usage went from 13GB to 27GB without adding a single asset or mod, i also didn't build anything either,

On my 16GB system, I get ~10GB RAM usage with another ~20GB of page file for 30GB of data being loaded (by everything) minus less than 10GB for Windows and other apps running, leaves over 20GB for Cites Skylines. I own all DLC except Campus (on this account)

On my Dad's rig, he only has the base game and 8GB of RAM and uses 7GB RAM and 15GB pagefile.

ok suppose i just gotta deal with it then

Yep, I use lately about 5.6GB RAM and about 26.5GB virtual memory (pagefile)
CyberVibes Jun 12, 2019 @ 8:12pm
I have a 50GB pagefile but now it seems most of the assets want to sit in my 32GB of physical ram, pagefile use is about 25GB whereas when i had 16GB pagefile was 42GB, my build is at 30k population and has no high density housing and is mostly based on rural villages with one main town center, so not a huge amount of assets in use by any means.

According to loading screen mod in using 688 assets plus maybe a couple of hundred vanilla assets, i had a total of 4500 assets being loaded with both 16GB and 32GB

So, i'm unfortunately now in the position where i have to add loads more assets to fill my pagefile again :)
snowflitzer Jun 12, 2019 @ 8:28pm
I agree with you CyberVibes. It doesn't make a lot of sense how stuff gets loaded. I guess without the loadscreen mode is a must for me to run it. Then the limit I have at the moment is about 1600 additional assets and about 42 mods I can use before I don't have enough memory :)

It's a perfectly reasonable amount of mods and assets. But be wary that you have to factor in all the assets added to the game by DLC too.

The game reserves a lot of RAM on load by loading everything at once (every model, every building, every road, every asset) to make sure everything will work together (nothing missing, errors, etc). Once it's done loading, it will normally drop it's RAM usage significantly. The main thing that will eat your RAM is the texture detail you are using. Many assets will have textures for low, medium and high graphics settings each requiring more memory than the last. If it's eating all your RAM, try changing the textures down to medium. Minecraft can run on a potato, but throw some high-detail textures at it and it too will eat your system for breakfast.

Another commenter said their RAM went from 13GB to 27GB without changing assets, but this jump was likely caused by loading higher detail textures instead. This can sometimes be kicked in unknowingly by software like GeForce Experience automatically changing graphics settings in the background to match your newly detected hardware.

I don't use nvidia and my video settings are the same as previous, but your comment led to me to do some tests and reducing the textures and level of detail just seem to decrease my pagefile usage, i'm still using around 30GB of ram whether it's set high or low, the only setting i 've found that has changed was the xmp profile wouldn't work with my new sticks, so currently waiting to get 2 more replacement sticks so i'll do some more testing after their installed.

@CyberVibes did the RAM upgrade have any effect on FPS or lag? I have been thinking about upgrading RAM for a while now but not sure it is worth it.

The best thing you can get for this game is a new cpu with a verry good single thread performance!
CyberVibes Jun 15, 2019 @ 3:44pm
Having ram that's at least 2666mhz will help as well, along with a m2 Nvme SSD and as Termite says get the fastest single core speed CPU that you can afford, all these upgrades saw a boost from my old setup.

I don't have any issues with game performance. My i7 6700K is fine. It mostly stays at around 30%-40% utilisation. I am, however, interested to know if a RAM upgrade from 16gb to 32gb really does have any effect on the game as some say. I know upgrading my SSD to an NVMe and setting a 50-60gb pagefile made a big difference.

I am also not sure why people think the game is only single core. As far as I remember that was changed a few years ago in a patch. It certainly uses all cores on my system.

@Raisin56 the number of mods and assets you use is not that bad at all. But as @CyberVibes says the game will fill your RAM however much you have.
maculator Jun 16, 2019 @ 2:38pm
It uses more than one core, but the simulation cant just be split on different cores so a strong singlethread performance ist stil beneficial.
I got an i5 9600k and it uses all the 6 cores. Its far better than my old fx 6000-something.
I also switched from 8 to 16gb of ddr4 ram and didn't notice a huge differenc besides the fact that it now uses 12gb instead of 6.. :D
A nvme SSD is also good for better loadtimes but doesnt really change the fps or simulationspeed.

I'll stand my ground and say the most noticable upgrade was the i5 running at 5.2GHz.
