i7 9700k vs ryzen 7 3800x?
I'm going to buy a new pc, but I'm struggling to choose a cpu.TT

Here is my plan A-
Ryzen 7 3800x
64 GB RAM (Samsung DDR4 16GBx4)
RX 5700 XT 8GB

Also, here is my plan B-
i7-9700K
64 GB RAM (Samsung DDR4 16GBx4)
RX 5700 XT 8GB

I play CSL and.. maybe I'll operate 'SolidWorks' program. What do you think about plan A and B?

Plan A is better all round machine. 64GB RAM might be overkill, although if you can afford it you might as well :) However, Intel still have the fastest primary CPU core which will give slightly better performance for C:SL.

To add to the above.....

Not sure why you are choosing the 3800x as opposed to the 3700x, for example. There are others as well in the AMD lineup but the 3800x didn't, to me, seem to be an obvious choice when I considered whether to keep with an Intel CPU or move over to one of the Ryzens. But maybe there have been advantages noted in buying that particular chip since their launch, I have not bothered keeping up with tech news of the new Ryzens that much since I made my choice.

64 GB could seem to be excessive, then again with this game I do seem to utilise my 32GB of memory so I suppose it becomes relevant if you use a lot of the workshop assets and feel the need to load them all for each city build.

I've got 4095 assets subscribed, and Loading Screen Mod configured to share & optimise: I use 12GB RAM, and 27GB page file. With 120 enabled mods, and those assets, game loads in just over 2 minutes.

In terms of performance, there's a mod coming soon that increases frame rate by 5-30 fps (depending on hardware, zoom level, scene complexity, etc). Where I used to get ~19-25 fps I now get ~30-50 fps.

For reference I have AMD Ryzen 5 2600X 3.9GHz, 32GB RAM, 64GB swap file, 1TB NVMe SSD, GTX 1080Ti.

It seems like that Cities Skylines hold all the simulation on the main core, so you need to chose the CPU with highest GHZ frequency.

For example.

Less core\threads with 4.5 GHZ will be a lot better than more core\threads core with 3.0 GHZ

May I ask which mod you are referring to? For the FPS increase? I'm playing a full city nowadays and hardly get 10-12 fps with various mods.

Thanks

Just go to cpubenchmark.net - It doesn't just showcase one or two professional benchmarks but takes the average of potentially THOUSANDS of benchmarks uploaded by people who own the gear so you can get a much better picture of relative performance.

When you go onto their CPU section, you will need to select "High-End CPUs" and also pay special attention to Single-Thread Performance. Most games still only fully benefit from FOUR cores so you could get a 20-core monster that shows up as far greater TOTAL processing power, but actually has slower individual cores (lower single-thread performance) than something with less cores.
