My city have gotten fewer cars and pedestrians, and streets is almost empty, is this normal?
Hi
One of the fun thing in CS is all the traffic and people moving around. In my city with 85k I have gotten fewer cars and people in the streets as I have progressed in the game. The streets feel empty and boring, no cue or jams on the roads, and very few people moving around the city.

I still have many transport trucks and a lot of tourists moving around, also many service vehicles (garbage, police etc). I also have around 200 buses, 260 metro vehicles and 140 trains moving people around.
In the "simple stats" mod I read that I have 15k vehicles in town and 970 of this is from residential buildings. Is this normal?

I use many mods like traffic manager, rush hour, more network stuff, Metro overhaul, Transport Lines Manager ++. Can this reduce number of cars and people in the streets? I know that public transport reduce number of cars on the roads but pedestrians should not be effected right?

Anyone experienced the same? What can I do to get more activity in my city?
Thanks for help.

it sounds like you have a very efficient mass-transit system, or more likely you are reaching the vehicle limit of 16k and vehicles are having issues making their trips on time, if they can make it at all.

You likely need to eliminate vehicles to start with. i.e. reducing imports/exports. You shouldn't be exporting anything as they have zero benefit and just create tons of vehicles.

Then you can work on balancing your zoning.

Mods can be problematic, especially if you use them to fix issues in your city.

Thanks for replying. What you are saying seem reasonable.
If I add all industry vehicles in "simple stats" I get 12238 in total + 839 that is train cargo vehicles. In total I have 15021 vehicles according to "simple stats". I did not know that there is a 16k limit.

Another thing I forgot to say is that I use the "81 Tiles" mod so my city is spread all over the map, possible causing number of cars to feel less when spread over a large area.

Much of my resource industry is spread around and linked to general industry and commercials. I also have a pretty extensive cargo train system and cargo harbor system that is able to move a lot of cargo.

How can I reduce imports/exports vehicles?
How can I balance zoning?

First you need to understand this is an agent (cims) based simulator. This means cims need to get from point A to point B in a timely manner or bad things happen.

Right now, it seems your issue is time. You have vehicles on the road for too long and causes the cim counts to be high. for example:

You have 100 cars spawning every second. They are traveling across the map to make deliveries and are on the road for maybe 10 seconds. so over 10 seconds times 100 cars, you now have 1,000 cars on the map at once.

But, if you have 100 cars spawning every second, but they can travel next door in one second, then you constantly have 100 cars on the road at all times instead of 1,000.

So you need to zone areas with a purpose. Cims like to travel less than 1km. If they go past 1km, then they can have issues.

for example, if industry is more than a km from commerce, then commerce will decide it takes too long to travel to industry to get goods to sell at their store. Instead then will import goods from off the map.

so then you have a truck traveling from the border of the map to your city for a long distance that take a lot of time. There seems no time limit on this (my theory is the highway stops the clock and starts back up when it reaches a street). But you still have the vehicle on the road for a long time even though the timer is on hold. After it makes the long delivery, it then needs to return the truck back to the outside border and has to travel the whole distance of the map again.

As you can see this can take a long, long time if you have heavy traffic.

So try to zone different zones within 1 km of each other for best results.

Also, you can use mass-transit options to get vehicles off the roads. I think the time gets suspended as well when using mass-transit plus it takes cims off the road as one bus can hold like 30 cims, so that will get 30 cars off the roads. or freight, it can get 30 trucks off the road when using cargo trains.

The biggest mistake I see is making isolated island of industry with no residents or commercial. You need to try and get a good mixture of zones in one area.

If you make three island of one all commerce, one all industry, and one all residential, I think you can imagine all of the traffic flowing in all different directions at a great distance.

Just try to eliminate all these long treks on your map and the better off you'll be.

Thanks for all the information. I always zoned raw resources next to general industry and then next to commercial zone, but I did not know that there is a 1 km issue for transport.

Most of my traffic is trucks exporting so I think maybe I'm producing too much in some areas, and maybe I have a unbalanced industry, maybe too much raw resources.

ops I have isolated islands with mostly only industry..ops..and I love it...but as you say this is probably a mistake.

Hmm I love the layout of my city now and I have built it over a year adding more and more districts and more and more mods. I need to do some redesign to make sure all elements of the production chain works well.

Is there a limit to number of pedestrians also?
