What's the proper way to introduce geothermal heating?
I added the geothermal plant first and then started upgrading the pipes. Needless to say I went from $200k down to zero in a matter of seconds because people left because of no water.

Should i have upgraded the pipes first then the building?

First build up your economy and cash reserves because no matter what, heating costs.
Focus on plenty of power production... considerably more than your consumption requirements.
Then, when you can afford it, upgrade your plumbing to heated pipes. They will be heated by electricity, which may mean a huge increase in consumption, which is why you prepared for it first.
Then make the switch to geothermal. This is expensive to build but once it's working, it will alleviate the power consumption, making it a much cheaper alternative.

Did you use the upgrade tool to upgrade your pipes? Saying cims left because of no water leads me to ask this. Heating pipes also carry water and sewage. There is this mod that automatically upgrades all pipes for heating. It also tells you how much it will cost before you do it.

Yes I was in the process of upgrading the pipes when they suddenly left. I'll check that mod out, thanks for posting it.

FYI, only residential wants heating. Not sure if there is any benefit for jobs to need it.

With that said I built a 300k pop, 9-tile city, no workshop, and no heat pipes at all without issue.

I upgraded pipes before setting any policies on it. This seemed to help to of gradually introducing thermal heating and not losing all your money.
