medical clinic vs hospital
A hospital's upkeep is six time that of a clinic ($2400 vs $400). But it does not look like a hospital covers an area six times larger than a clinic.

The range/radius of coverage of is maybe twice that of a clinic, which means it covers an area about 4 times larger than a clinic (while being 6 times as costly in upkeep).

It looks like clinics are more financially efficient than hospitals.

A hospital provides more service points toward upgrading building. Same thing with other larger facilites like fire station and police department. The amount of smaller services you need to place to have enough point for upgrading will cost more than a single bigger version.

You could subscribe to mods that have bigger radius.

You could build a sickness free city and use no clinics or hospitals at all and wait until you have a population of 75k+ so that you can build the medical center monument building and provide citywide influence coverage for levelling up purposes.

How do you build a sickness free city?

It's very simple. Only pollution makes cims sick, so just build your city so that no residential zone gets contaminated by any form of pollution. It really isn't hard and is something you should always strive for when planning your zone locations.

Don't buildings just need to be within the radius of various types of service buildings in order to upgrade?

Buildings in my city are not typically covered by multiple service buildings of the same type, most are within the radius of just one clinic, one police station etc, and upgrade to max level just fine.

To achieve the same with higher level service buildings would cost me more upkeep.

I only need a single hospital for enire city.
