Good layouts for Cities Skylines?
Ok so everytime I try to play the game I end up getting huge grids and it never works.. I usually put Residential one side, commercial in the middle then industry. I don't like how I'm doing it because it's boring. What are some of your tips/favourite things to do on C Skylines?

Lately I've been trying to pit the grids against one another; I start a grid in one place and then, instead of expanding the current grid, start another grid at an angle to the first one.

I like using network extensions 2 tiny and pedestrian roads to build residential areas with parks and not directly on roads!
I try to avoid placing apartments next to a road, and I never zone: I place buildings with RICO and plop the growable

But the downside is it takes a lot of time!
I have been playing like 50hours on my current city and still didn't reach 10k people :p

I don't think a more or less gridded (high density) layout is that bad, as long as commercial and industrial isn't all zoned in huge chunks. Better spread them around in a bit smaller doses and near major roads. Also, you don't need to change all residential zones to high density as soon as possible :)

I've been toying around with "bedroom" communities, a square block of 20-30 grids for commercial, then square blocks of 30-60 grids of residential off of the four corners of the commercial zone. This leaves the width of the commercial zone between each of the residential zones for wider high speed roads, rail, trams, parks, larger service buildings or whatever is desired.

I think that grids is what the central part of a city becomes so to handle the skyscrapers and the volume that comes with them. If you look at the history of most real life cities they don’t start out gridded. I am trying to build this way. That is remodel the city as population grows and try to keep the character of the old. I’m not quite to that point yet but it may be soon.

The city or cities thus far.

That's my problem. So how would I spread them evenly out? How far away can Res, Com & ind be away from eachother?

Take inspiration from real world cities- study the layout of your own nearest city, analyse what works well and what could be improved- use it as the starting point for youe own map build,

That's a good idea. A lot of inspiration can be drawn from how the main roads leading in and out of the city interact with suburbs and ring-shaped highways.

Problem is, I live in a small town. I also go to the countryside a lot. I have been to cities but I don't go to them often enough to remember how the roads are.
