Tutorial to get roads imported from OSM
1 - Go to openstreetmap.org
2 - At the top of the page click EXPORT; a tool box will open on the left side
3 - Below the coordinates box is a blue link "manually select a different area"...click that
4 - A white box will appear on the map. Drag the corners to change the size of the box; in the top left of that white box is a little box with black dots...click and drag that to move the entire box to the area of the map you want
5 - Click the blue export button; a map file named map.osm will download
6 - Put that file in your documents folder
7 - Start the game--->Editor--->Maps--->New
8 - Click on the Cimtographer button on the far right
9 - Make sure the directory is set to your documents folder or it won't work.
10 - Click "Load OSM From File"; somewhere below that it will say file is loaded
11 - Click "Make Roads" and bam...roads will create.

EDIT - Be sure the path in cimtographer for the osm file matches the path the file is in on your computer. Also, do nothing with the bounding box; i left it alone and all worked fine. Lastly, if you want the terrain to match up, see a comment below on how to do that thanks to

All of the map mods are broken. No one has fixed them.

You can only use terrain.party (when it's not down) and manually install height maps only. We can no longer import roads.

I tried as well with a smaller area and still it didn't work. I'm gonna try something else...

That was what stumped me. I've seen people importing maps from Chicago and London. This small town/city is only 16,000 population and (estimating) 10 square miles.
Yeah...I tried all different sizes and nothing works for that particular area. I haven't a clue as to why though. Just to be certain, i tried my city again and it worked fine. Did you try using the OSM Import mentioned above? Try that method and see if it works.
You need to watch onedrive. It hijacks your documents folder and leave your local documents folder empty. Make sure both are on onedrive and documents both. Don't use this PC to find it.

But, OSM Import uses the co-ordinance, rather than the mazp files themselves. If I can't get it to work with co-ordinances, then I'll try the osm files.

And did you get the osm file from openstreetmap.org? I'll use your coordinates and try to replicate it.

I did. (The area is Mount Vernon, Ohio btw.) I'm just not clear if I'm doing something wrong on my end or the area is the wrong shape/size.

Ok so last night I messed with this for a while and it seems, or so I think, that the reason it's not allowing us to build the roads for your coordinates is because there are too many roads? Doesn't make sense I know cause people have huge cities like London, LA, NYC, etc... So what I did was selected some areas with a minimal amount of streets and it worked fine. Mostly rural areas. But when I tried your area again and others like it, I got that too large or too small error message. After the Mass Transit update certain elements of Cimtographer stopped working; like the size or roads count. I don't know what else it could be. I mean I exported a huge ass map from open streetmap.org, with very little roads and it worked.
I tried with OSM Import and things worked great with the default map coordinates. But when I added my own, it crashed when loading the map.

I tried using your map.osm method and I got a permission error from onedrive. Maybe onedrive won't work.

But here is my error message screenshot:
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=972466504

I'll try a reboot to my ither win10 drive without onedrive and see if it works that way.

brb

EDIT:

Okay, it still does it in Cimtographer. But I did have to rename the map.osm to just plain map or it wouldn't find it.

I even tried manually installing the heightmap from terrain party and then just make roads and failuire there as well. Some data out of range, and I know that map is exasctly the size of the game map. (18km x 18km).

Not sure how to get it to work. I think you just have to get the right numbers the program wants. Some maps work, while other don't. but the default numbers work fine, at least for OSM Import. I didn't try the ones from Cimtographer, but I assume it's the same.

The path box always has onedrive listed. Just put the map file in your normal documents folder and edit the path box - just remove the one drive part and it should work as far as making roads goes. Mine is - users\damej\documents\map

I had an issue with OSM Import this morning. I subbed and tried using it and it looks the same as cimtographer; guessing thats how its supposed to look? Anyway, nothing worked for me using that. I unsubbed and resubbed cimtographer but Cim wasnt in my content list, the osm import was there again. No matter what i tried i could not get the osm import mod removed. This evening i see that osm import is gone and cimtog is back again. Not sure what happened...lol...
So i wish there was a way we could get one of these working so just the one tool could be used to import the terrain and the roads, like it used to be. It's open sourced on github but i don't know coding. Currently, as you know, you use openstreetmap.org for roads but then to get terrain you have to use terrain party and its not gonna match up correctly. You said there was some overlay mod or something? Can you link me to it? Also, for me anyway, using the coordinates in the bounding box with terrain party is broken for making roads using overpass-api

Ok, so i tried making roads using a super small area of your town and still i got that error message about being too large/small. Cimtog has issues and i guess thats one of them...it doesnt want to work with all areas of osm.

Sorry for the late reply, I had "Subscribe" on and I never got a reply notification. I really appreciate all the effort you put in trying to get it to work.
No problem at all and now the dang thing doesn't work anymore for my town either...smh...I tried re-doing mine and nada...
Everything i try with a map; big, small, etc...I get that too large/small error
