Tutorial to get roads imported from OSM
1 - Go to openstreetmap.org
2 - At the top of the page click EXPORT; a tool box will open on the left side
3 - Below the coordinates box is a blue link "manually select a different area"...click that
4 - A white box will appear on the map. Drag the corners to change the size of the box; in the top left of that white box is a little box with black dots...click and drag that to move the entire box to the area of the map you want
5 - Click the blue export button; a map file named map.osm will download
6 - Put that file in your documents folder
7 - Start the game--->Editor--->Maps--->New
8 - Click on the Cimtographer button on the far right
9 - Make sure the directory is set to your documents folder or it won't work.
10 - Click "Load OSM From File"; somewhere below that it will say file is loaded
11 - Click "Make Roads" and bam...roads will create.

EDIT - Be sure the path in cimtographer for the osm file matches the path the file is in on your computer. Also, do nothing with the bounding box; i left it alone and all worked fine. Lastly, if you want the terrain to match up, see a comment below on how to do that thanks to

You can only use terrain.party (when it's not down) and manually install height maps only. We can no longer import roads.

Both versions of Cimtographer are not working so I did the above and it worked fine. You still need Cimtographer, just do it the way I described rather than what is written on the mod page. If you want the terrain you can still use terrain.party to do so.

Thanks for this, but I can't get it to work. I keep getting a bunch of errors when I hit Load OSM, the first of which is "System.OverflowException: Value too large or too small." I'm only trying to import a small area (my 16K pop. hometown) so I assume that's the case, but I'm not sure how to fix it. Any ideas?

Nice guide, but first you say it does work with cimtographer, then you say it doesn't work with cimtographer.

I know the OSM Import mod does work with the last update. It is just a patched up Cimtographer with some updates to it.

Also, the terrain.party uses pre-defined map boxes so it lines up with the game perfectly. It also has scaling options to have larger/smaller maps and have them fit tighter.

The only issue I have is with water. Some maps treat water as flat land for some reason. So you have to dig them out. So when you mark out the map and download the osm file, make sure to take a snapshot of the map. Then you can cut out the map area and use it as an overlay to properly align water and other tiles. You can use the EvenBetterImageOverlay to use as an overlay map to see where to line things up.

But I'm not sure if it's working properly for mass-transit and it network system has been reworked. I haven't tested it yet. Maybe I'll try later on. I know that even with Natural Disasters it was needing to follow a certain order or it wouldn't work.

Maybe make a video of your steps? I know it's time consuming, but it makes it easier to follow and diagnose if there are issues. Also, which cimtographer are you using? There are 2 or more versions.

Just to be clear...you have the map.osm file in your documents folder and the path is correct in Cimtographer, right?

Yes. I actually changed the path to test and I got a "file not found" error without the other messages.

If you got a file not found error, then it is wrong somehow. Just double check the locations and file path. check for files in other folders.

I am using http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=416064574 this.

Cimtographer is needed to import the osm file using the steps above. What doesnt work or doesn't work for most is the intructions with the only two versions of Cimtographer i know about. They say to go to terrain.party, etc...swap the coordinates, remove the last two numbers from each coordinate, etc...it works for the terrain itself but when you try to make the roads using their methods, it crashes or just sits there or there is some error message.

On my newer PC, Microsoft One Drive Documents folder, for whatever reason, is the default docs folder. Just move it to your users/yourname/documents

I'm fairly new at this myself and had no idea there were other importers for roads and such. I've always searched for Cimtographer. What else do you recommend?

The author of the OSM Import you listed, had this to say back in May;

Just a heads up, I think the new Mass Transit DLC has fundamentally changed the assumptions this mod was operating under with regards to manipulating road networks. This mod may not work again without significant changes.

Finding the path isn't the problem I don't think. (I had manually adjusted for OneDrive before I posted.) If it helps, the area I'm after is -82.3476,40.4785,-82.5602,40.3168

And did you get the osm file from openstreetmap.org? I'll use your coordinates and try to replicate it.

I did. (The area is Mount Vernon, Ohio btw.) I'm just not clear if I'm doing something wrong on my end or the area is the wrong shape/size.

I used the coordinates you gave me in openstreetmap.org, exported, and when tried to load in-game i got the same error message you did about being too large or too small.

Just to test it, try going a bit smaller and see if that works. If it does, then we know the original was too big of an area.
