Does this apply to you?

Do you have sufficient RAM?
Have you oversubscribed to custom content?
Please state your specs and quantity of custom content if any.

You **probably** have too little RAM for the mods and assets you're trying to load. Do you also have other programs running simultaneously, or is it just Cities and Steam open when this alert appears?

Just cities and steam

Your windows pagefile is to small. Set the value to automatic for every drive.

(This applies only to Desktop, and wont work with as Laptop)

There are RAM sticks inside your computer. 4GB is insufficient for this game. I would recommend a minimum of 8GB (I went from 8GB to 12GB for this game). Shut Down your computer and open the case. There should be (usually) 4 slots in alternating colors. There may be one stick or two sticks in these slots. If there is one, it is 4GB, if there is two, they are both 2GB. Take one of these sticks out, and DO NOT touch the metal contacts. Somewhere on the stick, there should be a label of some sort with the company name, model, and the size. Look online for another identical stick, preferrably from the same company, with the same timing, volatge, and amount of contacts. make sure they are both the same (you cannot mix DDR3 and DDR4 for example). it may cost you 40 dollars or so. When the new one (or two) comes, you should put the new one in the same color slot as the original. (Both chips are put into a black slot, for example.) If you had to get two 2GB sticks, it should not matter where you put them.

The actual fix for these programs would be to prevent Windows 10 from closing programs without permission. After few alerts, the Windows closes Cities Skylines. It feels like a crash to the user as Cities gives an error message but in truth, the error happens because Windows forces the game to shut down.

I currently have 12 gigs of ram, which there are 36 to 50% always free when playing Cities with few memory uses spikes on certain situations. These spikes seem to happen at random.

It is extremely frustrating that the game3 itself runs just fine withpout any problems but Windows being wet nosed brat with self centric issues makes it to close down :( Microsoft will not provide any help for this nor have i founbd any way to prevent Windows automatically closing programs when it thinks there is too litle memory in use.

I'm afraid Cities Skylines must be doing something wrong. I have 8GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 950 (and 500GB SSD) and the game closes without a warning or sais I have not enough memmory... Memmory used is less than 4GB to close!! Going back to the Main Menu and loading then the same (or another) city will crash or close the game because a lack of RAM, so everytime I have to change anything in the Menu I have to exit to Windows and run it again. Any suggestion? It's a pity and a waste of time to lose hours of game or a whole city every now and then.

You're using mods, and since Cities Skylines or it's Engine cannot handle RAM properly, it will continue to allocate more RAM to the game, even if it doesn't actually need it.. thus using up all your memory eventually regardless of how much you have.

You have to exit the game if you want to load up an old save, as it will eventually use up all your RAM.

There is little mention of this, as they probably don't like to admit it, but that's how it is.
This seems to make sense. So if I upgrade to 16GB maybe the probleme will be less probleme or less often hehe. That's OK. Thanks.

install more ram

Thanks Apples and BLÀde. Can't play anymore (only this game) with 8GB. :steamsad:

If you can't play at 8GB of RAM then you either need to remove unneeded workshop (preferably all of it) or increase you RAM or pagefile if you want to continue using workshop.

But workshop is you issue. Workshop are user generated add-ons to the game that increase RAM usage and CPU usage for each item.

You can try to increase your virtual memory (pagefile) if you can't afford RAM right now.

Here a link to the TenForums on increasing the pagefile for Windows 10. Steps 1 through 6.:

https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/77692-manage-virtual-memory-pagefile-windows-10-a.html

Here's a link from Microsoft for doing it in Windows 7 (8 as well.) Skip to the bottom section labeled, "Change the size of virtual memory"

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/15055/windows-7-optimize-windows-better-performance

Set your pagefile to three times your current installed RAM under Custom Size.
i.e. 3 times 8GB = 24GB. Set both minimum and maximum to 24GB.

It is important that the Initial size and Maximum size are the same or windows will try to resize your pagefile and it can take a while and may pause your system while it does it and may cause it to crash.

Good luck

Thanks for your guide. I've already put 24GB of virtual memmory (in a SSD) and the game crashes even before loading a city so it is very difficult to manage assets and MODs. Last time a could play normally I unsuscribed the MOD 'Network Extensions 2' in Steam Workshop before. So I'm going to uninstall it again but Im afraid I'll lose a half of my 3 big cities, again and again... It's really frustrating I can't keep a city going on and safe since I play CSL.
Well, if I get the game running as usual I'll post that issue here.
Thanks again.

If it is crashing, then you need to figure out why. Uninstalling game won't fix anything. You have a problem elsewhere.

Try temporarily launching the game without any workshop at all with the --noWorkshop flag, then post your results.

Also, post your crash error messages. or even your output_log.txt file.

There two options. You dont have enough room on your hard disk (which seems the problem to me) or you dont have enough ram.
