You don't know how to trade. Trading is quite easy.
First. Never carry any high level item such as seemingly harmless chicken or toolbox That's what make high level enemy appear by raising road safety.

So, you goal at the beginning is to just sell a little amount of low level item to the nearest town, get exp from it, and then upgrade merchant skill (skill "ration" is very good), and you will get stronger bit by bit, buy stronger merc when you have money.
Trader route is a bit easier in my opinion. or the combination of both.

It's not being nitpicky. Saying the design balance is off. For a "trading" game, it's ridiculous that I can't even cart over a single item without 2 battles against 4 bandits each time.
