I am not trolling I am giving me people good advice, you on the other hand are trolling. Playing the games in release order is flat out stupid and wrong they should be played in chronological order to understand the story better.

So you STOP trolling.

thats a very very bad idea for new players. certain prequels assume you know certain things. the prequels are also more difficult.

it NOT a bad idea for new players, it is a exceptional idea for a new player to play it in chronological order. The story has far better continuity in chronological than in release order.

No, but now that they have been released it is better for new players to play then in story chronology and not release order.

The secret ending of Birth by Sleep is absolute nonsense if you haven't played Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2 (and is also set after both games). Similarly while the gameplay section of 0.2 is set between BBS and 1, the framing sequence cutscenes are set between DDD and 3. So where does that game go chronologically?

Birth By Sleep can be enjoyed as your first game if you want to, but it was definitely designed to be enjoyed as a prequel where the players know what is happening in the future. The whole Radiant Garden section is a bunch of cameos of characters who you're supposed to recognize from the previous games.

The games were meant to be played in the order that they were released. Trying to do them otherwise doesn't really work when most of them have prologues or epilogues set further along. Even if you wanted to do the games in chronological order you would still need to play Birth By Sleep after 2 due to the secret ending and 0.2 after DDD due to the framing sequence

This is the correct order to play them in.

Kingdom Hearts X / X Back Cover / Unchained X / Union X
Kingdom Hearts Dark Road
Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep / Final Mix
Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep 0.2: A Fragmentary Passage
Kingdom Hearts / Final Mix
Kingdom Hearts Chain of memories / Re: Chain of Memories
Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days
Kingdom Hearts 2 / Final Mix
Kingdom Hearts Coded / Re: Coded
Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance
Kingdom Hearts 3
Kingdom Hearts 3: ReMind DLC
Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory

Any other answer is just frankly wrong.

Playing Fragmentary Passage before Dream Drop Distance is asinine; it's a direct sequel to that game picking up right after the secret ending of DDD and leading into the very opening moments of 3.

If you play that game before the original Kingdom Hearts it will spoil pretty much everything about Sora, Riku and Kairi's journey over 1, 2 and DDD

It absolutely will not spoil anything, and in fact it WILL make the whole time line and story to be better understood. Playing it in release order is asinine because it make a already stupidly complicated and convoluted story more understandable.

The answer to questions like this is always release order.

I've been poking around forums on the Internet for a little and it seems almost unanimously the consensus is first time players should do release order. I agree with your statement and think 9 out of 10 times, release order is the way to go.

Since nobody here will give you a proper answer like you see, i would recommend to search the internet for an official website with guides, tips and stuff to get one. Most people here live in their nostalgia and, in my personal opinion, are not cognitively capable of coming up with a suitable answer with good arguments.

Google gives a pretty fast and good answer on this question:
1. https://www.ign.com/articles/kingdom-hearts-games-in-order
2. https://www.techradar.com/how-to/how-to-play-the-kingdom-hearts-games-in-order
3. https://www.mensjournal.com/videogames/kingdom-hearts-chronological-order#gid=ci02dd4cad200126ce&pid=kingdom-hearts-birth-by-sleep

Also ChatGPT says following:
"To experience the full story of the Kingdom Hearts series, here is the recommended chronological order to play:

1. Kingdom Hearts χ (Chi) / Kingdom Hearts Unchained χ / Union χ / Kingdom Hearts Dark Road (Browser, Mobile)
These games cover the ancient Keyblade War and the origins of the Kingdom Hearts universe.

2. Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep (PSP, PS3, PS4, Xbox One, PC)
This game is a prequel to the main series and introduces key characters like Terra, Aqua, and Ventus.

3. Kingdom Hearts (PS2, PS3, PS4, Xbox One, PC)
The original game where Sora's journey begins.

4. Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories (GBA, PS2, PS3, PS4, Xbox One, PC)
This game takes place directly after the first game and is crucial for understanding the events leading to "Kingdom Hearts II."

5. Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days (DS, PS3, PS4, Xbox One, PC - HD Cinematic Cutscenes only)
Set concurrently with "Chain of Memories," it provides important backstory for the character Roxas.

6. Kingdom Hearts II (PS2, PS3, PS4, Xbox One, PC)
Sora's journey continues and many plot threads from the previous games are expanded upon.

7. Kingdom Hearts: Coded / Re
(Mobile, DS, PS3, PS4, Xbox One, PC - HD Cinematic Cutscenes only)
A follow-up to "Kingdom Hearts II," focusing on a digital Sora.

8. Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance (3DS, PS4, Xbox One, PC)
Takes place after "Coded" and leads directly into "Kingdom Hearts III."

9. Kingdom Hearts 0.2 Birth by Sleep – A Fragmentary Passage (PS4, Xbox One, PC)
A short game that serves as a prologue to "Kingdom Hearts III," focusing on Aqua's story.

10. Kingdom Hearts III (PS4, Xbox One, PC)
The climax of the Dark Seeker Saga, bringing together plotlines from all previous games.

11. Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory (PS4, Xbox One, Switch)
A rhythm game that recaps the series' story and provides some new plot points after "Kingdom Hearts III.

Playing the "Kingdom Hearts" series in chronological order rather than the release order has several advantages, particularly when it comes to understanding the complex storyline and character development. Here's why you might prefer the chronological order:

Starting with "Kingdom Hearts χ (Chi)" and "Birth by Sleep" provides a solid foundation for the story. You learn about the origins of key events and characters, making it easier to follow the plot as it progresses. You witness the growth and motivations of characters from the beginning. For instance, understanding the backstories of Terra, Aqua, and Ventus in "Birth by Sleep" enhances your appreciation of their roles in later games. Events unfold in a logical sequence, making it easier to grasp the cause-and-effect relationships within the story. The history and lore of the Kingdom Hearts universe are presented from the earliest points, giving you a thorough understanding of the world's mythology. Prequels are played first, so their foreshadowing and references make sense when you encounter related events in the sequels.

As you can see, nearly every website and guide recommends the chronological timeline to play. So beginning with Chi and ending with the KH3 DLC. But in the end, the choice depends on your preference. Tbh, this thread is the perfect proof, that this question can't be answered properly. At least not in a forum like this, as there are too many people with different opinions. Asking questions like this in the Steam forum actually only generates confusion (like you see) and sometimes even anger.

It's great info and well researched, I just want to point out there are just as many sites I can find that suggest playing release order first. You've been a bit choosey with what sites you provided.
For example:
https://www.thegamer.com/kingdom-hearts-games-order-play-best/
"Play Kingdom Hearts games in release order for the best experience, with a few exceptions for a more impactful story.
Chronological order is not recommended for first-time players, but can be fun for those looking to experience the games again."

https://www.siliconera.com/what-order-should-you-play-kingdom-hearts-in-timeline-explained/
"To truly grasp the Kingdom Hearts saga, the best approach is to play the games in their release order. This is both the simplest in terms of lore and allows you to experience the growth of the series mechanics."

https://www.square-enix-games.com/en_GB/news/kingdom-hearts-order
"As you’d expect, our basic suggestion is to follow the order outlined in the various KINGDOM HEARTS collections to experience what’s known as the ‘Dark Seeker Saga.’
You’ll start with KINGDOM HEARTS HD 1.5 + 2.5 ReMIX. This collection takes you through Sora’s earliest adventures with Donald Duck and Goofy, introduces the fan-favorite character Roxas, and jumps back in time with a sequel that has big implications on what you’ve already played, and what’s still to come."

And so it goes.
