They're best played in release order.
Never in my life have I found a story to be more cohesive in release order over chronological KH is no different. There is no you must play it release order. You either pick release or chronological either way the story is told. The difference is with chronological order you get information early that allows you to formulate and solve things faster while not having to be disorientated with back & forth. You also get the satisfaction of a linear timeline. Almost everyone that says do not chrono don't even attempt it. The only real downside is having to go between better gameplay to worse gameplay then back to better. But I never really cared too much for the gameplay in these games the narrative is what matters to me.
Notice how Unversed don't appear until AFTER the release of BBS?
Notice how Xion isn't even hinted at in KH2?
How about Axel not acknowledging Roxas looking like Ventus, despite having met both of them?
Even ignoring how bad the story would be, you'd also be jumping all over the place in terms of game mechanics, rather than getting to appreciate each entry for how it improved on the last.
A plot hole is a plot hole regardless how you consume media. That's on the developer not on how you chose to view the series
The real silver bullet is that Kingdom Hearts has time travel as a recurring part of the story, making a true chronological playthrough impossible. You're really just meant to follow the story as it unfolded (as they were written).
This is the first suggested roder on Square Enix website, which is almost release order (Days was released after KH2 but here is suggested before it):
The other suggestion on the website is the chronological order, which I am personally trying this time, but I have to clarify that I have played all the games in release order before the pc release, so I am doing it as a means of experiencing it in a different way this time. I think release order mantains mysteries better, but chrono is feeling good for a replay at least. As if it is for a first gameplay? I don't know, it certainly has less mysteries played this way, but if that is better or worse depends on personal tastes.
The order on Square Enix for suggested chronological:
Again, these are the ones suggested at SE webpage, not my personal opinion, nor I am saying they are the only way, they also mention that there is no 'correct' starting point, so the suggestions are just that, suggestions.
Ugh, KH1's platforming always makes me have a sad. It gave me problems back in my PS2 era, it gave me problems when I played it on PS5, and it continues to to give me problems on PC. Racing Riku on Destiny Island and failing due to the janky platforming always fills me with a seething rage,
[KH3 prologue] - 5th in play order
[Game that's literally the introduction to the franchise] - 6th in play order
I couldn't think of a worse first impression than this.
PD. BBS isn't a mobile game but a port from a PSP one. The fact is spoils things remains unchanged though.
And yeah, I know BBS is a PSP game. What I meant is that it's still an Osaka team game made for handhelds, and it shows.
On another topic, I personally love UX story (enjoyed in the theatre as it is now without having to grind/wait for more release, but with a custom char, in youtube videos it doesn't feel the same as that is not your char), and I find it attractive even outside the context of the rest of games. I don't think I would have dropped it if it had been my first game, but no way to know it as it certaily hasn't been.
I did. Very rarely do I do a release order run on my first attempt. Unless I play as the games dropped. And I didn't with KH as I only played bits and pieces whenever I'd go to someone's house. My first real run was chrono and I loved every second of it. And yes I'm running it again like that on steam since I prefer it to release in every way. Just like 99 percent of all my media.
Yup that was literally my point. There are two routes to run these games. Both are viable to both veterans and newcomers. I found the latter was superior in story telling and flowed better than the jumping of release.
