The correct play order if you want to understand the story a bit.
people say to go release order because its less confusing
Well, this its the chronological order, I see it more appropriate... instead of starting to build the house from the roof.
That means you probably don't understand writing, worldbuilding and storytelling. Anyone reading this thread, don't do this to yourselves and don't listen to that guy. Just start with KH1 and go with the release order for the best experience (just remember to play KH2 before watching the 358/2 cutscenes, they're only listed in the opposite order because of the original release schedule of individual 1.5 and 2.5 collections).
I think it's also worth mentioning damo's fandub of KHX/Union X which makes it easier to digest than just text, it's split in 2 videos too, one covering just X/Back Cover, and the other the part that belongs to Union X, giving a better stopping point for KH3 than just a timestamp. Also arguably, players could watch all of X and Union X together before 0.2/3.
As for Damo's video, he takes too many liberties for my taste. Everglow's video just compiles the cutscenes, and also adds explanations during the video that are very good.
But I invite you to comment and add the Damo videos, or anything else you think is appropriate, so people can see that there are different options.
