luabackend works just fine as do mods that have been updated for the steam release

I'd like a subtitle retranslation for the series.

The number of big things that are incorrect now isnt that much or anything, but the original Japanese does have a bit more consistency overall if that makes sense.

Some questions people have, like "KH1 says there is only one keyblade so later games are a retcon" is an example of something caused by the english translation only. Riku in Hollow Bastion claiming that "There is only one Keyblade Master" is also just an English thing, in Japanese its more about "There is only one hero" (cause he's trying to one-up Sora, not because he's being literal).

Found this video that adds some more. But also spoilers for the entire series. But yeah, a rework subtitles mod would help (and for 3, one that uses the Japanese cutscenes for the changed facial expressions).

Wow, they removed animations too. I knew they got some things wrong already, but why the animation changes, seems on purpose then...

^I do sadly think the animations and some dialogue was on purpose from either Disney or Square. Its something most fans aren't really aware of even got changed which is understandable since its so obscure and has never really been discussed.

Whether you follow it or not (Nomura has been clear in leaving it open for many interpretations) it’s very suspicious that they are all male relationships having their expressions changed. And considering some dialogue in 3 was changed around too. It does come off as censorship.

I’m NOT saying that they’re all actually in a relationship. But the original scenes should be left intact for the fans to decide based on what was originally shown. Instead of being so scared to the point of reanimating how characters look at each other

Like how Isa looks a lot happier to see his friend in 3 Japan, but they changed him to look a lot more stern in English. That changes their character dynamic and the mood of the scene. I think they’re just close friends, but that doesn’t show well in the changed English version

It’s not leaving room for interpretations, it’s flat out changing the content of scenes for an entire region and removing even the chance for another interpretation

A "restored Japanese Cutscenes" with the more accurate translation for when its inaccurate would be good.

due to the way the games is compiled, modding them would be like rom hacking. each game have all data packed into its executable.

Makes sense.

That makes makes it pretty difficult since assets arent all individually and neatly organized. So even something like editing or replacing text would be difficult.

Although even things like the main antagonist's motivation becomes much more consistent and clearer with his prior explanations from BBSas well. So there was no contradiction there originally, just shaky translation that took the wrong meaning.

Considering the ending of FF15 was also changed in a similar way, I'd bet on it being Square. They seem to have had a real drive in that era... by which I mean like 4 years ago... in toning down emotion for the NA release.

The 15, think, in case you were wondering, was the main character outright saying that he loved his friends at the end of the game, instead turning it into "you guys are the best". Which is BASICALLY the same thing, but considering the scale of what they'd gone through it was perhaps not the best time for reservedness.

Oh.

You know what makes this even weirder? KH series spoiler they were so open about Riku in games like KH2, DDD, and even still in 3 (even with the changes), that even new players often still have a "hey, wait a minute" reaction at some point and then rethink what they know. Usually at the reunion they have in KH2 where no amount of small text changes can cover what is being shown.

No matter what the player then decides on is up to them (but the strength of their connection is immediately made clear no matter what interpretation you pick), but KH has never been a series to previously hide its emotions in the animation itself. The emotions of characters is practically what carries the cutscenes and text anyways.

What even was FF7R then? That game was loaded with open emotions every which way. Did it release before or after KH3? I dont remember. So maybe Square is growing out of that random period.

It was released about a year afterwards. Close enough that it's hard to tell.

Especially since development and release date are two different things. So I guess we wont know for sure until the series continues.

One positive from this, is that ReMind in 3 actually does reference some mistranslations and then translates them appropriately instead. But during the loading screens. So it is at least clear that Nomura and the team were aware of some of them, and tried to make them more clear to everyone.

The first one is a good example of this, as its always the first anyone will see when playing the DLC and is an accurate translation of what was said during that scene from the main game. Its not a perfect solution as it doesnt clear up everything, but it makes sense since it would cost a lot to go back and redo things.

So maybe this will keep up going forward too and they wont have to rely on load screen band-aids.

I second this. I'd love to look into making some mods but not quite sure where to start as most games I have tinkered with in the past have been more open to modding such as skyrim etc

Is there a program that can unpack the assets and what not? I've seen a little bit on youtube of people modding the original emulated versions of the game but I'm unsure if a similar method would work for the steam release

https://github.com/OpenKH/OpenKh

I use this to mod the game and everything seems to work okay, it also has a bunch of other tools and stuff for several versions of KH.

I can try my best to explain:
There are 2 different Kingdom Hearts folders, let's start with getting luabackend working:
Hover over Kingdom Hearts in your steam library > right-click > properties > Install Files tab > browse
Next, grab luabackend from it's github and copy paste the files into this kingdom hearts folder.
THEN, Right click the luabackend TOML file and open with notepad and add "My Games/" to the front of each directory for every separate game in the notepad.

Time for the other folder:
Go to "This PC" > Documents > My Games > KINGDOM HEARTS HD 1.5+2.5 ReMix
In this folder make a new folder called "scripts" and open it
In this scripts folder make 4 new folders titled bbs , kh1 , kh2 , recom
Now get the lua files for each mod you want off nexusmods and drag it into that game's script folder.
Make sure you sort the mods on nexus by the updated tab and only try mods that have been updated since the steam launch day.
