Aero series spells reduce the damage you take (not sure how much, sorry), their duration being (Max MP + 18) seconds. Can help survive, especially if Herc gets combo happy on you.
Cure series spells heal for (Max MP x 3) plus a flat value of 6 for Cure, 18 for Cura, 30 for Curaga. So if you had 10 MP, Cura heals 48 HP, and Curaga would heal 60.
If Herc is hitting you too hard, grab accessories that give some combo of Defense, HP, and MP. Likely focusing on Defense and HP.
Magic damage isn't going to be meaningful against Herc even with all the best +MP stuff, but Thundara with enough +MP might clear the mobs along the way smoothly. Mobs can be worked around taking a bit longer, a drawn out boss fight like Herc is an actual danger, I feel it is better to take a Keyblade with good STR for this, especially since there is no Donald or Goofy to save you with healing or Aero.
Herc is invincible while glowing, and seemingly invincible during his big spinning top attack. If Herc is glowing, picking up a barrel and throwing it at him (gotta hit with it) will remove his glow and stun him briefly, that is your main attack opening. Barrels will spawn in every time Herc regains his glow. Herc also tends to taunt when he regains his glow, giving an opening to grab and throw a barrel.
Hopefully something here helps with the strategy side of things :)
