Why is the first game nearly 80GB?
Why on god's green earth is a game from the PS2 nearly 80 gigabytes whereas the 3rd, newest and most recent entry, the more complex and graphically intense entry, is way less? Where is all of that data going to for a PS2 game? Please enlighten me, I am thoroughly perplexed:p3p_sweat:

I will say, if you're dead set on understanding the extremely convoluted story this is the best option I've found for straightening everything out: https://goombastomp.com/explaining-the-kingdom-hearts-storyline/

It might be best to play through the games one at a time, then check back on this site and get your ducks in a row about what's going on before continuing on to the next one.

Yeah.. About that.. Honestly, you're better off not trying to 'understand' the story and play it for the experience while picking up lore as you go.
I half-agree. Having played the games since the PS2, I think there was a point where the story was actually very engaging and fun to follow. It's obvious to anyone that has finished KH2 that the story could have ended right there. Until KH2FM there was nothing teasing another game, and there weren't any hanging plot threads.

I feel like after KH2, things began to feel convoluted and fake. There are so many elements that were obviously introduced as a means to eventually move the plot to KH3. There are now people who write off entire games as "It's just a bridge to the next game" like it's no longer important for each individual game to be a satisfying experience by itself. More than ever, you need to do your homework to play these games and not be completely lost. It's exhausting and unsatisfying.

I agree that 1 + Chain + 2 is a good story arc.

But I dont think it was ever made to be an ending to the series. 2 Original, even before Final Mix, had the secret ending teasing what would eventually be BBS. Same with some light teasing that there were "others" before Sora/Riku who used keyblades, and that for some reason they are gone now. Also the last scene of the game (other than the BBS teaser) is a promise that there will be more adventures going forward, as well as teasing the next villain that first gets named in 2.

"I actually have a solid idea on what the movie's setting will be in my head. In the previous game's secret movie, I wasn't even sure if I would be making a sequel or not, so some parts of it were quite vague. But this time I already have an idea my head where I think 'This is it.'" - Nomura after the release of the original 2.

He writes in chunks clearly. Everything being planned from the start would be both ridiculous and wrong, he's even confirmed that. But there is still foreshadowing, especially with the games between 2 and 3 since those started getting ideas all at the same time (358 and BBS being made at the same time, and DDD connecting them together does feel deliberately planned). DDD does have THAT scene, now that one feels like it comes out of nowhere, but its smaller reveals feel like they had proper setup years before.

also, if you REALLLLY wanna know... it's because this game was localized into a zillion languages; and that REALLY ups file sizes
since its only text, no, not really

Nah the audio files

Even though they weren’t usable at the time, the Japanese dub still took up space similar to God of War or any games that had language dubs, the difference being you could change the language in those games

Kingdom hearts only recently let you “Change” the audio language by going to steam properties for the game

But the language you use counts as a different save file and can’t be used between English and Japanese versions

Why can’t we just download the other languages separately, I’m not doing an all around the world speedrun of these games

They should make the arguably worse AI upscaled textures optional as a separate DLC...
