I remember this game being really difficult on the hard difficulty, did they add something in-between of normal and hard in the 1.5 version?

It would still be better than in the original release. Proud Mode is more balanced and the new abilities are really helpful.

Also, Proud is not too difficult if you level up enough before facing the bosses.
