Alpha-Transparency in images?

If I have a picture that has an alpha-transparent background, the background appears in 3d as white. Is it possible to add a feature that allows it to be transparent? I.e Imagine a character with a background, but removing the background in photoshop so it's just an alpha transparency, then viewing that in AR.
