GRID Autosport
Why Grid Autosport is the best Codemasters game for some time.
Before I go on to explain why I believe Grid Autosport to be a very good game, I'd like to ask those of you who struggle to read for more than ten seconds to leave and not bother commenting on something you haven't read through; there will be no summary, or TL;DR insert for the impatient here. Like I tell my children, you can't have an opinion on something until you're fully informed. It's sad nowadays, many are fine with spending hours typing whinges and complaints on forums but can't be bothered to spend time reading. Although, considering the significant amount of complete and utter crap written in these boards, it's not entirely surprising that people have tired of reading others posts. But hey, this is the world we live in!

Anyway, I digress.......as usual....apologies if you're already losing your temper over my elaborate introduction.....please, calm down. You'll not do your blood pressure any good at all.

Assetto Corsa, arguably the best racing sim we have at present: very accurate car physics and outstanding "feel" to most of the cars. Your patience and persistence is rewarded with immense satisfaction when you shave yet another 100th off that Imola hotlap. Great stuff, but even the hardened AC fan would have to admit that the single player experience when racing in a pack is lacklustre at best. The AI, although much improved since their first outing, are simply there for the ride, not offering any real excitement to the race. I said to a friend yesterday: when I'm racing around AC with the AI, I feel like I'm doing my own thing, whilst they do theirs. Detached from the action is how I feel in AC single player races. I think it's an amazing sim, but if you want heart pounding, adrenalin fueled racing action, then you need to go online and accept the negatives that come with it.

Grid Autosport, NOT a sim, Codemasters never said it was. I've been playing Codemasters' stuff for almost 30 years, starting when the games were on a cassette, and none of their racers have been true sim. But, what Codemasters USED to offer was a flying by the seat of your pants experience. The original TOCA and McRae games offered this experience in abundance and, in my opinion, that experience stopped after TRD2 and Dirt2. That sense of being caught up in the action; being part of a pack of highly skilled racers; driving so close to line, but managing to escape those almost fatal crashes; experiencing pure exhilaration from each race.

Autosport has those moments, oh yes, and lots of them. Yesterday I was racing open wheelers around Sepang, only a 4-lap race. On the final lap I was in 2nd position, approaching the final corner I hit the brakes as late as I dared, in an attempt to pull up to the apex on the inside. The guy in 1st steered in slightly, causing me to tap his rear left tyre. We both accelerated out onto the final straight, I knew I'd lost that battle and would have to settle for 2nd place. I was amazed, when just 100yrds from the finishing line, I witnessed the same tyre I hit explode, rubber flying everywhere, followed by sparks. His car pulled to the right, stopping on the grass verge, I managed to pass by and took 1st. It made that race so exhilarating you'd be forgiven in thinking it was scripted. Even if it was, who cares? It made that one race the most exciting track experience I've had since playing against some of the world's best online racers many years ago.

Autosport does not offer a sim experience, it is not an AC competitor. The handling isn't real, but it lends well to the experience CM want you to have. It's all about the experience, experience, experience. It offers sheer fun, excitement and many, many WOW moments. Just like my races online used to have, but I don't need to contend with timewasters and the inevitable pile up at the first corner after spending 2 hours qualifying. Autosport offers what Codemasters use to give us with TRD and Dirt; breathtaking, heart pounding, simple fun and powerful experiences.

In my opinion, the best game Codemasters have made for some time.

Good on you, CM.

Very well said! I can't wait to pick this game up!
race driver grid the best game in series:krlvlup:
I've been playing the game all night since I got it. I'm enjoying it obviously. I went straight online with it and raced with the same group of guys for a few hours that was cool, made 2 steam friends. Everyone had mics almost and only a guy here or there echoed and they fixed it. Definite different experience from say watch_dogs (which i actually really like as a game), where everyones mics are on blast with speaker noise but to be fair I dont think it even tells you that your mic is on.

Anyways, at first I was having a real hard time with the game. I sucked I came in last of all the human drivers they were way better than me but that was fine, I like driving games im just not the best at them. Then I turned on the race line and something clicked for me. You need to go from the brakes to the accellerator like immediately when youre cornering and you turn so much better. I dont know if ive been playing racing games wrong most of my adult life but I remember reading the info that came with gran turismo for ps2, I forget the exact titles but the first one for ps2.

It said that your tires can only be doing 100% of something at a time. This is kinda obvious to read that but it went on to say that like, if you want to focus 100% on breaking then you cant be turning. If you want to turn, you cant be accelerating. If you want to accelerate you cant be turning. To get optimal results of course.

So I always thought you were supposed to break and then lay off the gas while you turn then hit it when youre ready. But that doesnt work in this game, if you dont get right on the accellerator you turn like a cargovan. So I havent been back online since i figured that out, but it helped my driving a lot. Im still not very good, but its been instrumental in getting better results.
OP...TL;DR

Only joking.

Fantastic post and I wholeheartedly agree with it.

That's the exact post I would have made if I could have been bothered ;-)

Couldn't agree more, I bought this game waiting to be let down, I was happily surprised when the first race I took part in was the closest race I had ever been in, and yet, still a clean race.

Well done CM, well done!
Thanks for the kind words. Please do let us know what you think as you continue to play, whether it's something small or big, your feedback is important :)

.....your feedback is important :)

Worthwhile feedback is always worthwhile. However, Steam forums do seem to contain a particular breed of fools, so I don't envy your task of having to sift through the mountain of tripe. ;)

Alright, didn't try corsetto, was pissed by the GRID 2 dlc policy,i thought the game lacked red turtle shells and jumpers to be complete. Bought this new grid with fear in my throat...(after one more crazy GRID 2 session filled with lunatics and psychos), i bought a g27 at the same time (yesterday), went straight to online mode (i might never even step in the single player mode), and it was painfull: arrived last on every single track.

After one day here is my temporary apreciation:
_very good learning curve in this game
_much better car behavior when you hit or get hit by an opponent
_the constant drift fest is gone, and the correct use of the break pedal is a must
_very good handling with a logitech g27 (beware my uninformed opinion on this one, just bought it and didn't really try it on other game)
_quite a tension when being in the middle of a pack of cars, but no fear of being thrown into the decorum
_doesn't take 1 minute of menus-browsing to exit the game anymore.
_Smashing your car will cost you money, good add

_Omg, really, the same tracks again ?
_even the model for the spectators are the same
_8 dlcs to come, where is the puke bucket ?

Finally we get the Grid 2 we should have gotten, and that we already paid for. You made us bleed 50€ more (for what should have been a free game fixer) and you are still gonna roll on us the dlc scam (shame on you all the yes-men at codemaster). I feel really mixed bout all this. Satisfied and shamefull (to be such a sheep) at the same time.
I fully agree with the OP.

Grid Autosport is agreat game. Since you're a veteren gamer (as I am). I wonder if you ever played the Microprose F1 games? They were brilliant. :-)
Geoff Crammond - please come back wherever you are!
Is it bad that I just want rain added ontop of the 8 new dlc's?
Would love a full weather daylight cycle but hey...
