I've since learned how to conserve them and I can finish a race with 30% on my back tires in those cars, provided I care enough to play that cautiously and sacrifice lap times in the process.
Just play it safe, keep a smooth, decent pace and your tires will be fine. Keep the car as controlled as possible.
