How I got Oculus DK1 (maybe also 2 will work the same) VR WORKING on WIN 10
Ok so I was searching for monhs to find this solution, so I don't know if it is buried in here somewhere or not, but I figured I should post it up. If it can be pinned too, that'd be nice as DK1s are dead cheap!

First off, it's not working in direct to HMD mode, so you have to fiddle a bit with maximising the window when you head into the race, and set up all your options first because you'll get no joy with the menu system being beyond sight. Best way I found was when you grab the title bar of the window (it will be running in windowed mode) then snap it to the top of the display on your rift as you would with any other window you wanna maximise. Then when you finish a race you can retrieve it by moving the mouse to the very top and grabing it back again. Anyway, on to the magic...

Runtime 0.7 and later removed the support for desktop extension, and 0.6 and earlier don't run in win 10. However, some clever clogs somewhere has written this program:

[For goodnes sake, steam!
Remove the carriage returns to reconstitute the link to the runtime switcher!]

It isn't obvious at first, but you run the shortcut 0.5 from wherever you like, but the rest has to pretend to be installed.
It's essentially a runtime where 0.5 is working with win10. There is a readme to follow, dead simple, just copy and paste the folders. I admit I was very apprehensive about copying a folder to my windows root, but avast says it was clean and I've got Grid working in VR, so they can key log me if they really want! You have to fully close (though handily not uninstall) runtime 0.8 before it'll work, but it does work!

For those who haven't even bothered to look into the Grid side of things, here's the blog.

Just in case the blog is taken down, here's the necessarry blurb:
To setup these options properly, after running the game once and closing it, open the following file:
C:\Users\[user]\Documents\My Games\GRID Autosport\hardwaresettings\hardware_settings_config.xml
Set the resolution line to <resolution width=”1920″ height=”1080″ aspect=”auto” fullscreen=”true” vsync=”0″ multisampling=”4xmsaa”>
There are also some Oculus specific settings you can play with in this file, if you want to experiment: <oculus enabled=”true” headMovement=”true” chromatic=”true” timeWarp=”true” vignette=”true” overdrive= “true” convergence=”1.0″ />

Follow the readme in the switcher program and the instructions in the blog post and it WILL work (buttery smooth too I found!), unless for whatever reason things have gone wrong for your specific set-up. For a long time I feared that a firmware update to the DK1 had rendered it useless beyond Steam VR, but salvation has come!

My appologies if someone has already figured this out, but here you go anyway, all in one place.

I would try this, but I don't want to invite lots of holes in my security and/or invite runtime error messages for other programs.

Yeah it's fair enough is that. The menu system is a pain to navigate too as it was never designed with VR in mind, so I reverted back to normal use in the end.
