How do I create a private server with friends?

you need to be friends with your friends and then on the left its the menu of ur friends then you click on them then you press invite them, you dont have to put the server type to public to do it, thats all you need to know

This Is not work!

There used to be a bug where the in-game friends list required a public game.
The most reliable way I found to have everyone join is to invite them from steamworks overlay (Shift+Tab).
If anyone fails to connect, everyone should close the game entirely and start it up- this seems to clear any cached connection detritus
