Engineer unable to equip lockpick (picklock)?
On a new game, playing a random world encounter with ym new squad for the first time. Eliminated most or all of the enemies already and I am trying to have my engineer pick the lock on a chest.

The problem is that when I "equip" the picklock to my engineer, it appears on the weapon slot that the picklock is equipped, however my engineer appears to be holding his hands on air or something invisible instead of a lockpick. Also, there is no icon to pick locks, just a blank button space, and the cursor turns to a red circle with a slash when hovering over the chest and I am unable to interact with it at all using ym engineer.

My engineer has 30 engineering and the lockpicking skill from the first skill tier.

Thank you in advance for any help. It is much appeciated!

Basic locpicks can be used by anyone with engineering skill. Try another guy. Also could you be holding mine probe instead?

Thank you for the reply. I ended up blowing up the chest, or shooting it open.

I think the problem was I was dealing with a booby-trapped chest and did not yet understand the mechanics of booby-traps. There was a big "M" on the chest which I now believe indicates a "mine" of sorts.

I progressed to the next level in the campaign and found another "M" on a door and this one clearly indicated there was a trap because the character said something about it outloud.

So, unless I am mistaken, the "M" indicates some kind of explosive trap that needs to be disarmed, correct?

Yes and is disarmed by mineprobe. Detecting depends on eng level I guess

Yeah, technically it was already "detected" because there was a big "M", but I had no idea what the "M" meant at the time.

It is all good. This game is amazing and this is hardly a complaint. Thank you for your help!

Lock Picks? who the ♥♥♥♥ has time for those. Not to mention the risk you run if you failed to detect a trap.

Always carry a high capacity mag smg and shred doors and chests from a safe distance. Nothing in chests is ever worth the risk or time.

HI grenades even minimal damage ones also make decent door breakers.

For concrete bunkers with steel doors jsut go through the walls and ignore doors all together. Something heavy to shred them is ideal or just get the alien laser guns to swiss cheese places.

But lock picking no ♥♥♥♥ that always. Your engineers have better things to do like blow ♥♥♥♥ up or be the best mech pilot they can be for end game.

LA stands for Loves Attention and she is and will always be my fave engineer for allies.

For Axis I will pick that little irish psycho lass any day. THough the ♥♥♥ guy is cool to.

If you dont leave every map a ruin you ARE DOING IT WRONG!

Grenades in chests will detonate. They are lacking almost always and chests are fine source. Some rare guns will be destroyed if in same chest as grenade
It is all about discrete application of styles.

Sometimes you destroy.

Sometimes you use finess.

Like Chugu said, items can get destroyed in chests if you use an explosive or even a gun to "open" them.

You open chests to get stuff. With shooting or blowing chests up you risk to destroy stuff you want to get. The risk increases as you advance and chests get more full, each chest tends to have some grenades. Some levels have chests setup as daisy chain so you blow up one and boom all chests are gone
