Do characters respawn?

I am playing Obscure for the first time. One of my characters (Stan) ran up to a monster to attack it while he was controlled by AI and just died. Do the characters respawn at any point or is he dead for the remainder of the game? Trying to decide if I need to continue from a previous save point.
