Free play mode only has 9 ball?
Can't find any setting to change it to something else.

No freeplay just uses the last gametype you played. - 9-ball is standard after starting the game.
For example. Start a 8-Ball versus game. Leave it again and start freeplay these settings are in freeplay active.

This should be documented or implemented better. I had no idea about this and figured that Free Play was simple 9ball with no purpose.
