WTH is with this remake???
Okay, I've been waiting for this remake since the moment it was announced. The original was one of my favorite games on NES and now when I finally got my hands on it... WHAT THE HELL IS THIS???
The amount of enemies is ridiculous, the amount of HP on the enemies is insane, the inventory system is clunky and not helpfull and the amount of cheap damage situations is frustrating. And before anyone start screaming "skill issue", I played the original a week ago and it was NOT THAT hard or unfair. It was hard, after all it was a NES platformer, but still. And I played it in coop and we discovered that the girl jump differently, like higher, but not longer. Because of that the one player that controlled the girl couldn't get to some platforms. That is NOT ok! And if that is normal difficulty, I don't even want to look at what is going on on hard. And it's really sad to say all this, because the original was great and the art-style of the remake is awesome, but it's just not fun to play.

I dunno, I find the original much harder and way more frustrating, especially in the moments where you can't hit enemies point blank with the hook for example. Just practice a bit. It also gives you checkpoints and infinite continues (it was only 5 in the original), shouldn't be an issue to beat it.

I dunno... I mean, I grew up on NES platformers, but thought the original is one of the easiest on the system.

Most enemies die to one or two hits of the kasuri-gama, bigger stuff three, especially when it's powered up (2-4 hits each swing if you're not at full max range). Sometimes the sword is a better option, but it's typically a positional thing. The chain as your main weapon means you get range and can do weird stuff like air hover a bit. I used the sword fairly rarely, almost always when I was up super close already after a ledge pull-up or didn't want to be stuck in the air for a moment.

The game is much more in line with stuff like The Huntdown, seeing what's going on and proceeding methodically versus just slashing everything to bits running right. Take your time and watch enemy patterns, because they all have one. Ball robot bounces a certain number of times and distance, junk samurai takes two steps and pauses before ground slash so you can be in the air and chain him to stay hovered while the sword passes under, etc.

Exact same experience. Graphics are great, gameplay is needlessly frustrating as all hell. Girl character feels super gimped, like an extra-hard mode. Certain enemy projectiles linger for a second like a gotcha, like the slime things on the second stage. The smoke animation from the drips actually does damage. The shurikens from the scuba ninjas that stick around for a sec after hitting a wall does damage. Trying to attack an enemy slightly below after running off a ledge makes you do a useless downward stab that leaves you wide open. Seemingly every action you take has a bit of wind up to it. Jumping, attacking, switching and using items, they all take a bit of time you don't have because of relentless everything is. You can't rely on fast reaction alone, and need some foreknowledge.
I have beaten the orginal game many times and before playing the remake I tried it on Nintendo Switch to fresh my memory and I disagree with you completely. The remake enhances basically everything in the game. The original game now feels so empty compared to the remake.
I would recommend to stick with it, it appears hard at first, but is pretty fair. A big part is to figure out how to deal with enemies and placements. Try focusing on not getting hit at first, (e.g. pretend you're at 1hp). I somewhat agree regarding the inventory system though.
Get good.
