Hard controls
The controls feel a bit "rough", it's like I have to press the jump button hard for it to do the action, and sometimes I feel like it takes a while to react. Does anyone else experience this?

Not for me, controls are tight and (nearly) responsive. Maybe because you're using Kaede? Her jump physics are unfortunately nerfed and tanky as a result, and her jump distance is half the amount to Hayate without the swirl move (down left/right+tap A).

Well, I didn't know that, so there's probably a chance they'll "fix" it. Otherwise, using Kaede would be the ultra-hard mode of the game.

Kaede has the twirl/swirl move too. But Hayate's jumps definitely feel better.
That's because the controls blow. They just don't feel quite right. Much much worse than the original game.

could it be something to do with the settings?

can't test it here since im away from my PC, can anyone here turn off everything in the settings and see if it fixes that jump delay issue.

The jump windup takes six frames. That's why there's a delay, because the devs designed it with a long delay because they did a bad job.

So the problem is technical. Hopefully a developer will read this thread and fix it. The idea is to play with any character without any problem.
Note the short jump in the second screen of the first level, on the rotating platforms, there is a part where you have to drop down to one of those platforms and then jump forward, but Kaede gets almost right to the edge of the wall (in fact I died several times because I couldn't reach it). I don't know if the idea is for Kaede to grab onto everything or if they just didn't do the jumping action right. I think she should get to the other side by jumping without any problems.
