East India Company was originally invented by Nitro Games and Paradox Interactive, designed to be a fun and exciting naval strategy game. At least, that's what they want you to believe.

After 2 days of intense research I learned that the branch of Paradox Interactive that was responsible for coding and development promptly disappeared after the game's initial release, on July 31st, 2009. The team's manager, Leon Kolovski, is the son of an obscure but known Soviet engineer, Anatoli Kolovski.

In his time, Anatoli was also, coincidentally, the head of "The виртуальный мир Experiment", or "The Virtual World Experiment". This experiment attempted to allow Soviets access to all American databases by creating a perfect simulation of the world, allowing it to grow and change in the exact same way ours did, and then simply granting themselves access to all of the American documents within the simulation, expecting them to be copies of the real ones.

The project was disbanded after a hiccup in the system showed the team a vision of the future, where the whole team bore witness to the apocalypse. The team then decided to never use The виртуальный мир again, because no man should hold such power of prophecy. Most sources agree that all members were put to death due to insubordination, but there is some controversy as to whether or not they were in fact willingly killed due to the atrocities they witnessed.

Years later, bitter at the death of his father, Leon Kolovski vowed to finish his father's work, and use it to destroy the nation that his father fough so hard against, America. He worked tirelessly off his father's ideas, under the guise of being a Paradox Interactive employee. Once he realized the team he was working for was creating a historical game, East India Company, he knew what he had to do.

Leon encoded the game with The виртуальный мир as an engine. The team was shocked at the accuracy that the game presented players, but Leon was not, for he knew the truth. He altered the game for public use, so that it wasn't so accurate as to draw unwanted attention, but the core files were still in the game. Leon then embedded several messages into the game, using a Soviet code his father taught him, telling any and all scientists who shared his cause to use the виртуальный мир engine, and topple the American government.

Thankfully, a member of the team named Seamus Parker found the embedded messages shortly after the game's release, and told Paradox. They fired the whole team, giving Seamus a substantial compensation as the whistleblower. However, the game was already in circulation. It was taken off the shelves, and off of any site, including steam.

They re-distributed the game on the shelves and various online services after the messages were taken out, and the engines were changed. However, East India Company never got back on steam. The only steam copies still around are those with the hidden messages still encoded within them, as well as the core files for The виртуальный мир still in the game.
