Problems on startup.
Ok, at first I was not able to start the game as i continued to get an error. Something about not able to start hardware accelertated direct3d something. Googled as best as I could, but got nothing. As I was making this post about the error to seek help, I started up the game to get the exact details of the error when the game started up and now I'm about to make my first character. Not sure if I'm going to have to fight it every time, or if it will get this error again durning play.

My Specs (if it really maters) are:
Windows 8 64bit
Geforce GTX 680
16gigs of ram
Intel i7 - 3770

Also I tried compatibility modes Windows XP SP3 all the way to Windows 98/ME (just cause lol). 98 wouldn't do anyting. Any suggestions?

...and it did indead crash, but saddly no error report. Started it up again, and was able to do 2 missions. Looks like it will work but it likes to hiccup every so often. I like it so far.

That's the trouble with playing older games on newer systems, sometimes they can be a bit quirky (hell who am I kidding, even newer games can be lol).

At least you got it working, that's the main thing :)

SSSooooo tempted to buy this myself, but I'm not sure if this is the game I remember (and want to play for nostalgia's sake), or something else (can you chop off limbs and beat people to death with them?)

I am having the exact same issue, compatibility mode doesn't work (any of them). At least you managed to get yours to run, though temporarily. Problem is actually launching the game, about 5 seconds after starting we get 'Could not create hardware accelerated Direct3D Device.
Game will exit.' Doesn't even get to the black screen. (To be honest though I didn't spend more than 10 minutes actually trying)

Specs are -
Windows 8 64bit
GTX 660
16GB RAM
Intel i5 3570k

Would appreciate input from anybody else experiencing same problem. I'm not too concerned about being able to play this (it did only cost £1.99 after all) but would like to if I can find a way around this issue.

Hey CyePii, mine works everytime I hit play now (so far. Might have just jynxed myself :P). I have another game I have to fight with everytime on win8 but it does work eventually. I say keep messing with the settings (maybe some reboots her and there). It may start working like mine now.

@FuNkY

First thing that came to mind about beating people with limbs was Vampire The Masquarde Bloodlines lol. I only have like 2 missions done atm so I couldnt confrim anything :p

Yea, i'll prob just have to clear an hour free time so I can sit down and figure it out. I'll update when I find a solution that works. Might just re-install Win 7 and check if it runs just for the sake of it. I've had so many issues getting things to run on win 8.

I'm running win7 and getting the exact same massage. Anyone figured it out yet?

Success! After much fiddling around (not in that way...) with my graphic card settings which did nothing and re-installing the game, I finally got the game to run (duh moment) using OpenGL instead of directx 11. For anybody else having the same issue here's what I did..,

1) Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Enclave
2) Open 'Environment.cfg' with notepad or any word editor
3) Change VID_RENDER setting to this VID_RENDER=OpenGL <<-----copypasta if you want
4) Run game and enjoy

I still don't fully understand why the problem occurred though, maybe it just doesn't work with directx 11, though directx 11 is backwards compatible so.... ?????

@davecuk6

It should work on Win 7 too if your having issues with directx

Yes! You, sir, are a legend. Thank you.

Just a note, but as OpenGL was never really supported, some graphical effects might not work in this mode. (Such as the lighting within the skys)

I am running it flawless so far. Windows 8.1 64bit, i7 920, Nvidia GTX 660Ti, 6GB ram. Pretty good game.

I'm not getting any errors as such, but I am getting an annoying problem which occurs after every mission...

When I go to load the next mission the screen stays black..... and needs a CTRL+SHIFT+ESC to end task.
On loading it back up and 'Continue' it loads fine.
My Vid Render is Direct3D8.

Edit:
Actually now it wont load the Escort Marcus mission.......remains on Black Screen.... sound is there but now picture,

Tried the OpenGL switch, but it didn't work for me... went from giving me this D3D error to an "MOS Exception" crash.

Did some farting around with the game and on a whim, completely deleted the Environment.cfg file. Game loads with the minimum gfx settings, which you can then bump up to maximum. Don't know if this'll happen every time, but it's working now.

Very buggy... glad I spent a whopping 0.76 on it :P

Its been while since i last messed with the settings or anything, but for me the game runs smooth as silk with 0 errors or hiccups. Though I did send my pc off to get it looked at for other problems but nothing dealing with or afftecting this game.
