Too annoying to continue playing
I was Ok with the interface and teh game play was fair. But not being able to save and stuck withonly autosaves at the end of a quest was too much. It would have been great to play a demo first and save me some money. Which may explain not having a demo version.

Indeed... I would not recommend this game to others. The game overall isn't too hard, but it's SO easy to do SMALL mistakes which gets you killed, and have you restart the mission. Doing the same thing, even if it's just 5 min gameplay, over and over is pretty damn annoying.:displash: :zero:

The game isn't too bad. I think the missions are a bit short though, for an RPG it really lacks some basic interface buttons and placement, story is kind of loose and im kinda getting bored of it pretty quick

Perseverance seems to be lacking with gamers today...

Its a fun adventure, keep in mind the date. Its a decade old and puts some of the curent games to complete shame.

..good fun.

This right here.

Thank God I got the thing for free because if I'd paid for this slop I'd be pretty upset. This is AT BEST an action game in a fantasy setting.

Stark contrast to the Fallout Collection (1, 2, & Tactics) which is on sale for $5 and was being given away for free on gog.com the other day. Tactics is advertised as a tactical strategy game but it's more RPG than a lot of today's RPGs are and it was made in the late 90s.

Back when I got the game for the first time (I've only recently gotten the Steam version, and started it yet again) I didn't consider it much of a problem, and still don't. It's part of the core design of the game to force people to try and avoid getting killed, and the levels are short enough so even I can pull it off.

There are newer games that work like this as well -- it's really just a matter of balancing the difficulty accordingly. "Bastion" would be an example -- game only saves when you return to the Bastion, but not inside a level. So, if you get killed, you have to retry the whole level.
Trine (not Trine 2) had a bit of a mix -- your position in a level wasn't saved, but when you pick up an exp bottle, skill or item it would be recorded as being in your possession, whether you completed the level or not. And, of course, getting killed didn't do much and would just respawn you at the last checkpoint, of which there are quite a few in most levels.

Borderlands respawns you at various locations within an area when you die, but usually the point where you can enter the game (i.e. the "save" location) is only at the beginning of an area. So while getting killed isn't going to put you back on square 1, you still have to do the whole thing in one session. This might be a cost issue, of course -- the NewU stations that save your location also offer various additional features that the simpler "respawn only" versions don't have.

The part that I found slightly annoying, but not too much, was when I missed some gold in the first level. So I started it again and went looking for spots I had missed, and eventually found them. Except that I ignored most of the other gold since I already had them -- but the game just told me that I had 40 gold previously, and now I had 20 or so, so "no new gold added".
In the end I had to play it a third time to collect all the gold in one go.

But, of course, I know that now (I probably knew it before, but didn't remember). So when I go looking for missing gold I'll just pick up the ones I already picked up last time as well.

God forbid you would die in a game and have to redo things. That's just not right. hehe

Here's a trick...don't die.

Once upon a time there were games that didn't have someone holding your hand when you played them! We have grown much too dependant on how gameplay is perceived in just about every game that releases anymore. I appreciate both sides of the coin but I cut my teeth on 8 bit sidescrollers!

It was up to us to raise a new generation of gamers but it seems that we failed. All these kids whining in Steam hubs: "dis gam is bad becus me die alot"

Skyrim is considered an RPG (it's a good game but it ain't no RPG), CoD and Halo are the best shooters, ALL sidescrollers and puzzle games are bad and games that require thinking or any kinda skill are bad aswell.
Only good games are the ones that let you run through them.

Let's face it: Hard or hardcore difficulty is what used to be Normal or Medium in 90's games.
Hell, NES/SNES games didn't even let you choose a difficulty and once you died it was game over. I would like to see kids try those games and call them bad just because there is no save feature.

Emulators have that feature... Good that I'm one of the generation but not the one who fits for it's reputation.

Yea i play all my childhoods fav games on emulators but i'm thinking about buying a new SNES. It's just not the same without the "real" thing. :P
...altho yes you could buy a USB SNES controller and connect it with your PC.
